BORLAND INTRODUCES dBASE FOR WINDOWS

NEW YORK--June 27, 1994--Borland International Inc. today officially
introduced dBASE 5.0 for Windows, its widely-anticipated Microsoft Windows
database program. The product was demonstrated here at PC Expo to more
than 100,000 corporate and government users of computer hardware and
software. Expected to ship this summer, dBASE for Windows will provide end
users, power users and developers with a next generation product for
building Windows database applications and upsizing to client/server
computing environments.

Over the past decade, dBASE has become the worldwide standard for PC
database management and application development. As the only database
fully compatible with existing dBASE III PLUS and dBASE IV applications
and data, dBASE for Windows lets dBASE users and developers take all of
their existing knowledge and data instantly into Windows and client/server
environments. New and existing dBASE users will benefit from the products'
many innovative new capabilities, including Two-Way-Tools, an open
Plug-and-Play architecture, object-oriented dBASE extensions, a scaleable
Borland Database Engine, and a host of productive ease of use tools. dBASE
for Windows makes object-oriented development approachable by extending
the powerful English-like dBASE language with full object-oriented
capabilities for building robust Windows and client/server applications.

"dBASE for Windows will provide customers with the most advanced PC
databases ever developed," said Philippe Kahn, chairman and CEO, Borland
International. "This new product will allow customers to upgrade to the
newest technology and upsize to the more advanced client/server computing
environments."

This week Borland will officially unveil dBASE for Windows to tens of
thousands of customers at PC Expo in New York and Database World in
Boston. As part of the dBASE World Tour this month, Borland has previewed
dBASE for Windows to audiences in London, Madrid, Frankfurt, Paris, Milan,
and at user groups in Tampa Bay, Washington D.C., Boston and New York.

"The release of dBASE for Windows marks the largest product launch in
Borland's history," said David Watkins, vice president and general manager
of Borland's dBASE Business Unit. "dBASE is the ideal solution for our
customers; it leverages their investment over the past decade, yet takes
them and new users way beyond any other Windows database."

Millions of dBASE users have been waiting for a Windows database product
that will let them leverage all of their existing dBASE DOS applications
and code in the Windows environment. Because no other database to date has
offered the millions of dBASE users a compatible solution, the release of
dBASE for Windows may prompt one of the industry's largest migrations from
DOS to Windows.

"We estimate that over 15 million people use dBASE around the world--more
than all other desktop databases combined," said Chris LeTocq, director of
microsystems software research at Computer Intelligence InfoCorp. "Borland
is in a position to be very successful in the database market this summer
with the release of dBASE for Windows."

"dBASE 5.0 for Windows is the first database of its kind to meet the needs
of dBASE customers around the world," said Gary Folsom, a technical
consultant for Amtrak.

Full Compatibility with the dBASE Standard

With the largest PC database installed base, no single database application
development tool represents a greater investment than dBASE. dBASE for
Windows was designed to protect and enhance that investment by providing a
smooth transition path for users and by leveraging their investment in
knowledge, applications and data. Since dBASE for Windows is the dBASE
standard, it is fully compatible with previous versions of dBASE, so dBASE
III PLUS and IV users can move from DOS to Windows and client/server at
their own pace. No other product delivers this level of compatibility to
the worldwide installed base of dBASE users.

"This level of compatibility and flexibility is unmatched in the
marketplace," said Carl Hane, group leader of Micro Applications for MCI
International, Inc., Rye Brook, NY.

"dBASE for Windows has given developers the migration path we've been
waiting for," said Don Kranz, Kranz Database Consulting, Kingwood, TX.
"I've done other migrations from DOS to Windows, and this is the first
time a Windows conversion has let us capitalize on applications already
developed in the DOS environment."

Two-Way-Tools

dBASE for Windows is the first product to introduce Two-Way-Tools, a unique
feature that lets users work interchangeably between their visual design
and dBASE source code. When using the designers to visually create forms,
queries, and menus, object-oriented dBASE code is generated automatically.
Users can directly edit and customize the code directly. Changes made in
either the visual designer or the code are instantly reflected in the
other view. Only dBASE provides this exciting new flexibility when
building applications.

Object-Oriented Programming Made Easy

Borland's object-oriented development environment is revolutionizing the
way applications are built. dBASE for Windows makes object-oriented
programming (OOP) easy because it's based on the familiar dBASE language,
and is fully supported by the Two-Way-Tools. Therefore, users don't have
to know OOP to be productive immediately. By just working with the visual
forms and menu designers, they become users of OOP.

dBASE for Windows comes with 20 predefined classes covering every GUI
component, browse windows and forms, OLE objects, DDE links and arrays. In
addition, users can also create new classes. With a sophisticated
object-oriented environment that includes inheritance, encapsulation, and
polymorphism, dBASE for Windows is the ideal product for developers
wanting a powerful and easy to use object-oriented, event-driven
programming model for rapid application development.

"dBASE for Windows' object-oriented extensions are a major advancement for
developers," said Terry Crow, a database developer for a leading national
insurance company. "This is the future for reusable code in an
event-driven environment."

dBASE's Open Plug and Play Architecture

Users can leverage thousands of Windows capabilities and external tools
directly in dBASE for building custom applications. As seen in the chart
below, built-in and external tools reside on top of the dBASE III PLUS and
IV language with Object Extensions. Sitting beneath the language is the
Borland Database Engine, which connects to SQL database servers such as
Oracle, Borland InterBase, Sybase and Microsoft SQL Server. Informix and
DB2 support will be available later in 1994.

"As a Clipper developer, I am excited about the technological advances in
dBASE for Windows," said Matthew Whelan, an expert Xbase developer. "An
open 'Plug and Play' architecture that includes Code Blocks, a greatly
extended array system, and Borland's impressive object technology, are
exactly what we've been waiting for. At last I have a product that will
let me go straight into serious Windows development."

All external tools can be used just as if they were a part of dBASE. Users
upsizing to client/server will find that they don't need to learn anything
new to work with SQL servers. dBASE for Windows applications only need to
be built once, and then can be run locally or remotely.

Instant Connectivity to Client/Server

As a pioneer in upsizing, Borland designed dBASE for Windows to meet the
needs of large organizations and corporations moving to client/server for
high-performance management of enterprise-wide data. Users can upsize
dBASE applications to fully enabled client/server solutions. dBASE for
Windows is built on the Borland Database Engine, which lets users access
data from most popular SQL servers just as if they were using local dBASE
or Paradox files. dBASE for Windows handles all the work of translating
dBASE commands into the appropriate syntax, so that users don't have to.
Users can also embed SQL statements in their dBASE code and pass them to
the server for execution.

"We rely on dBASE for our maintenance schedules system," said David Sharpe,
senior quality engineer for British Airways. "dBASE for Windows allows us
to create applications more quickly and easily, while the client/server
support offers us great potential for accessing data and cooperating with
other computer systems and airlines around the world."

"This is the best-front end I've seen for a client/server environment,"
said Mike Henneberry, a database developer in Libertyville, IL.

Flexible Windows Tools Provide Single-Solution

dBASE for Windows provides a unique combination of power and ease of use
that makes it the ideal product for a wide range of users, from
non-technical interactive users to advanced application developers.

* Navigator - The dBASE Navigator provides you a visual way to manage all
files in one place. With just a mouse click, users can launch an
application, visually design and run queries, forms, reports and labels,
as well as use new data types, images, sounds, binary large objects
(BLObs) and SQL data.

* FormsExpert - The Form Expert lets users create professional multiple
table forms with just a few mouse clicks.

* Interactive Tutors - Interactive Tutors let users learn dBASE for Windows
while using their own data. Thirteen tutors walk new and experienced dBASE
users through learning database basics, the dBASE Desktop, new
capabilities in dBASE for Windows, and creating and using tables, queries,
forms and reports.

* On-Line Help - Includes a complete dBASE Language Reference, with
language syntax, using examples and related topics that can be copied and
pasted into dBASE programs.

* dBASE Desktop - A menu bar and SpeedBar provide one-button access to
important dBASE features. The SpeedBar is context-sensitive, so it always
displays only those buttons appropriate to the task at hand.

* The Command Window - Users may operate dBASE by entering dBASE commands
through the Command Window, which is similar to the dot prompt in dBASE
III and IV. The Command Windows is split into two panes; the top pane is
used to enter commands, while the bottom pane displays results. The
Command Windows also echoes all the actions from the interactive
environment. This provides an easy way to learn dBASE commands and can be
used as a macro recorder by simply cutting and pasting commands into a
program.

* SpeedBars and SpeedMenus - Users can quickly access common tasks and
features through push-buttons on the SpeedBars, and SpeedMenus that pop up
when right-clicking on any object with the mouse.

* Object Inspectors - Every dBASE window, tool and object has properties
that can be inspected and modified directly with Object Inspectors. Object
Inspectors can be accessed by right-clicking on any object. Object
properties can be directly changed without programming.

* Tabbed Dialogs - Many dBASE for Windows' dialog boxes include
notebook-like tabs along the bottom of the window. These tabs are used to
organize and simplify dialog box selections.

* Crystal Reports for dBASE - A custom version of Crystal Reports 3.0 for
dBASE for Windows is tightly integrated with dBASE and can create quick
columnar and tabular reports and labels based on dBASE data, queries and
expressions.

* Object-Oriented Programming Extensions and Event-Driven Model - The
popular English-like dBASE Language has been extended to incorporate a
true and fully object and event-driven architecture that provides
inheritance, polymorphism and encapsulation. dBASE for Windows comes with
20 predefined object classes covering every GUI component, browse windows
and forms, OLE objects, DDE links and arrays.

* Two-Way-Tools - dBASE for Windows is the first product to introduce
Two-Way-Tools, a unique feature that lets users work interchangeably
between the Visual Designer and dBASE source code. Users can either edit
the code directly or use the visual designer to make changes. This two-way
approach is the most productive way to build applications and is only
available in dBASE.

* Open Plug and Play Architecture - Users can leverage thousands of Windows
capabilities and external tools directly in dBASE. Once "plugged in," they
become a part of dBASE, and work just like any other built-in feature.
Users can easily integrate into their applications a host of Windows API
services for printing, picking fonts and colors, displaying message boxes,
and more.

* VBX Control Support - As part of the dBASE Plug and Play Architecture,
users can plug in their favorite VBX custom control, and it instantly
becomes part of the productive dBASE environment. Users can also directly
access and use any Windows .DLL.

* dBASE Custom Controls (dCC) - Users can create custom controls written in
the dBASE language. dCCs can optionally utilize any external procedure
(Win API, DLL support, etc.) supported by dBASE for Windows.

* Visual Query Designer - A visual "point and click" tool for creating
queries and establishing relations between tables. This tool generates
dBASE source code, allows users to select and join local and SQL data, and
enables conditions and filters to be applied to fields.

* New Field Types - dBASE for Windows supports new field types, including
sounds, images, OLE objects and binary large objects (BLObs).

* OLE and DDE Support - dBASE for Windows is compatible with Object Linking
and Embedding (OLE) Version 1.0 as a client and server. It is also
compatible with Windows' Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) mechanism for
interapplication communications. dBASE for Windows is architected to
support OLE 2.0 in a future release.

* SpeedFilters - Borland's SpeedFilter technology provides the fastest
queries when accessing sets of records across a network in a multi-user
environment. Speed improvements are automatic, and no programming is
needed.

* Procedure Editor - Users can create, edit and verify the procedures
attached to each event handler within dBASE objects. The Procedure Editor
includes syntax checking and color highlighting for simplified program
creation.

* Expression Builder - A dialog leads users through creating and ensuring
valid expressions within dBASE procedures, as well as in queries and
browses.

* Graphical IDE and Debugger -The dBASE for Windows Debugger is borrowed
from Borland C++ and enables developers to visually and interactively test
dBASE programs. Developers can set breakpoints, execute programs step by
step, and simultaneously monitor source code as it executes the value of
selected expressions, calls to other modules, procedures and external
functions.
