BORLAND ANNOUNCES dBASE 5.0 FOR DOS

The Fastest, Most Advanced DOS Database Management and Application
Development System

NEW YORK -- June 27, 1994 -- Borland International Inc today announced
dBASE 5.0 for DOS -a new version of the worldwide PC database standard
that combines 32-bit performance, l 50 new language elements for
Windows-like interface design, a powerful new event-handling model, and an
integrated compiler to allow users to create and distribute the fastest
and most sophisticated DOS database applications.

Launched in New York at PC Expo alongside the announcement of dBASE 5.0 for
Windows, the new DOS version of dBASE has been released to manufacturing
by Borland and will be widely available in retail outlets in July.

Going far beyond the capabilities of any other DOS database product, dBASE
5.0 enhances developer productivity and simplifies application development
through powerful new Two-Way visual design tools, full event-handling and
object-based programming models, and a fully Integrated Development
Environment (IDE) It also includes new tools that allow end-users to
manage their data more effectively -- without any programming.

"dBASE is the world's most popular database because it has always appealed
to the widest spectrum of users: from the novice to the corporate and
government IS developer," said David Watkins, vice president and general
manager of Borland's dBASE Business Unit. "Our customers are running mixed
DOS and Windows environments, and want a powerful DOS product to extend
their existing investment dBASE 5.0 for DOS meets users' needs by
providing new capabilities, making it easier to create, distribute, and
use powerful Windows-like applications -- all in the DOS environment."

"This new version of dBASE 5.0 is impressive -- I feel it will go a long
way towards keeping the DOS database market viable for a long time to
come," said Steve Brunk of the Santa Cruz Mortgage Company in Santa Cruz,
California. "The developer productivity tools let me design and deploy
fully-graphical, event-driven applications in record time. And the speed
of these applications is much faster."

"We estimate that over 15 million people use dBASE around the world -- more
than all other desktop databases combined," said Chris LeTocq, director of
microsystems software research at Computer Intelligence InfoCorp
"Borland's continued support of the DOS platform shows that it is
committed to this huge installed base of users."

What's New in dBASE 5.0 for DOS

dBASE 5.0 for DOS includes many new capabilities, tools, and enhancements
in the areas of dBASE compatibility, performance, application development,
and ease-of-use. Below is a summary of the product's key features. For a
more detailed description, please refer to the dBASE 5.0 for DOS
Evaluator's Guide, available from Borland.

* Full Compatibility

dBASE 5.0 for DOS is 100 percent compatible with users' existing data,
code, and applications from dBASE III PLUS and dBASE IV dBASE 5.0 for DOS
also retains the familiar and productive dBASE IV-style Control Center, so
that interactive users will instantly feel comfortable upgrading to the
new version.

"Our move from dBASE IV to dBASE 5.0 has been extremely easy," said Harry
Wellman, president of Data Methods & Service Co. in Burlingame, California
"We've been able to bring all our applications forward and update them
without any problems."

* Superior Performance

Due to the product's 32-bit operation and internal performance
optimization, applications written in dBASE 5.0 will run up to twice as
fast as equivalent applications created with dBASE IV 2.0, and up to 20
times faster than earlier versions of dBASE dBASE 5.0's SpeedFilter
Technology and Virtual Memory Management greatly improve the product's
speed in querying and browsing data, processing programs and reports,
retrieval, indexing, and other common database tasks.

* Designing Advanced Applications Visually

By supporting 150 new elements in the dBASE language, dBASE 5.0 brings an
object-based event model and Windows-like CUA (Common User Access)
interface components, such as push-buttons, radio buttons, check boxes and
menu bars, to application development in dBASE.

With the new Form Designer, users can create Windows-like forms visually,
without programming. Instead of hand-coding interface elements into their
applications, developers can simply select reusable CUA objects from an
Object Palette and "drop" them onto a form. The Form Designer is also a
Two-Way-Tool that lets developers work interchangeably between their
visual design and source code for higher productivity. Exclusively
available in dBASE 5.0 for DOS and dBASE 5.0 for Windows, Two-Way-Tools
represent a breakthrough in application development.

As in the new dBASE for Windows product, dBASE 5.0 for DOS includes an
Object Inspector that allows users to "program through properties" By
pointing-and-clicking the right mouse button, the inspector can examine
any dBASE object -- a form, entry field, push-button, etc -and modify any
of its display and behavior properties, from its size and color to how it
reacts when selected. In addition, dBASE 5.0's new event model recognizes
common application events, such as a mouse-click on a push-button or the
closing of a window, for easy and powerful development.

"The object technology is very intuitive in dBASE 5.0," said Tom Reed of
The Data Center, an applications development company in Rhonert Park,
California. "It's surprising how quickly I've become accustomed to it and
how much faster and easier screen design is The Two-Way Form Designer is
great because I can go back-and-forth between the visual tool and the code
any time I want "

* The Developer's Desktop IDE with 32-bit Compiler

For the first time, dBASE and Xbase programmers will have a complete set of
application development tools in a single product The Developer's Desktop
IDE includes an updated version of the 32-bit dBASE Compiler, integrated
with a development Project Manager, Command Window, and a new-and-improved
dBASE Editor

"No matter how wonderful a development tool is, it can get tedious having
to switch back-and-forth between different products," said Bill Adams of
Computer Guys, a software development firm in Las Cruces, New Mexico "It's
fantastic to finally have all these great developer tools built into one
product "

* Run Larger Applications

Users of dBASE 5.0 for DOS will be able to run larger, more powerful
multiuser database applications due to its new Virtual Memory Management,
which can utilize up to four gigabytes of combined RAM and hard disk
memory Additionally, the new version supports unlimited record locking,
greater array-handling, and can open 225 work areas simultaneously.

* Ease of Use Tools

dBASE 5.0 for DOS also includes a number of new ease-of-use features so
that interactive and power users can take advantage of its power and
performance:

-- A Crosstab Expert that generates cross-tabulation reports
   automatically from user-defined data
-- Context-sensitive On-line Help for intelligent assistance
   to dBASE questions.
-- Quick Layout options that automatically create dBASE forms,
   reports, menus and labels

System Requirements

dBASE 5.0 for DOS requires a 386-based or higher personal computer with
four megabytes of RAM and a hard disk with nine megabytes of free memory
Borland recommends at least six megabytes of RAM and a mouse for optimum
use.
