DATAPRODUCTS ANNOUNCES SOFTWARE UPGRADE PROGRAM FOR NEW TYPHOON LASER
PRINTERS

WOODLAND HILLS, California, April 27, 1994 -- Dataproducts Corporation
today announced a Software Maintenance Contract for its Typhoon 30 and
Typhoon 60 laser printers. For an annual fee of $495, customers
automatically receive upgraded software every 6 to 12 months.

Dataproducts' Typhoon 30 and Typhoon 60 printers were designed for today's
complex and ever-changing network environment. The printers' operating
systems can be easily upgraded because the controller firmware is stored
on an internal 80 MB SCSI disk drive. New software versions are installed
by inserting one or more 1.44 MB disks into the printer's internal floppy
drive. This procedure updates the operating system automatically,
eliminating the service calls normally associated with upgrading a printer
with plug-in chips.

Jim Christian, Director of Marketing, stated, "Dataproducts is one of the
first printer manufacturers to offer customers the ability to easily and
affordably upgrade laser printers to the latest revision. This unique
design ensures that the Typhoon printer purchased today will have all the
capabilities of a Typhoon printer purchased a year from now. As our
customer's needs change, we'll help them meet their requirements."

Software upgrades can install virtually any printer enhancement from a new
font or driver to an entire operating system. Upgrade disks may also
include new features that improve performance or make the printer even
easier to use. This ability to add new features means that the Typhoon 30
and Typhoon 60 printers can learn to support future hardware options as
they are introduced by Dataproducts--without calling a technician to
replace boards or change chips.

The Typhoon 30 and Typhoon 60 printers incorporate Dataproducts'
proprietary network architecture, Virtual Printer Technology (VPT). VPT
offers a standardized approach to printing in network environments by
allowing one physical printer to be configured as up to 64 individual
virtual printers, each with a unique configuration. Christian noted that
this basic, yet powerful, concept provides user access to print features,
regardless of the ability of host-driven print drivers to select those
features. "VPT is the common bond that ties all Typhoon products
together," according to Christian.

"Dataproducts understands network printing," added Christian. "One of our
primary objectives is to set new market expectations so that our customers
think of our products as the only viable network printing solutions. Our
strength in our proprietary Virtual Printer Technology, our family of
laser products, our worldwide service capabilities and our software
maintenance contracts program uniquely position us to fulfill those
expectations."
