DATAPRODUCTS DEMOS NEWEST VERSION OF VIRTUAL PRINTER TECHNOLOGY, VPT 2

WOODLAND HILLS, CA, May 4,1994-- Dataproducts Corporation will demonstrate
today at Networld + Interop, in booth #4589, a new release of its
proprietary network architecture, VPT (Virtual Printer Technology). VPT
was first introduced by Dataproducts in its LZR 1580 and LZR 2080 laser
printers. The latest release, VPT 2 (Virtual Printer Technology, Level 2)
is implemented in the newest Dataproducts offering, the 30 page-per-minute
Typhoon 30.

"VPT 2 provides additional functionality and extends the capabilities of
this revolutionary printer networking technology," according to Jim
Christian, Dataproducts' Director of Marketing. "VPT 2 is designed from
the perspective of how the network processes print jobs. This unique
approach provides powerful features unmatched by any competitive network
printing architecture."

VPT 2 allows one physical printer to be configured as up to 64 individual
virtual printers, each with a unique configuration. Christian noted that
this basic, yet powerful, concept provides user access to print features,
regardless of the ability of host-driven print drivers to select those
features. "It's as easy as selecting a virtual printer configured for
specific emulations, paper trays, page orientations, fonts, etc.,"
Christian said.

"VPT 2 does all the work! Since user selectable virtual printers are
automatically configured for either PhoenixPage (an emulation of
PostScript) or PCL5 emulations, errors associated with conventional auto
emulation sensing are completely eliminated," he added.

Christian noted, "VPT 2 makes it easy for network users to print their
documents, and it provides network managers with a powerful set of tools
to ensure trouble-free operation. VPT 2 is fully SNMP compliant, ensuring
compatibility with existing network management software."

Control and management of the printer can be accomplished in either of two
modes. A system administrator can use the RCF (Remote Control Facility) to
plug a terminal directly into the printer and conduct a dialogue with
system management functions, allowing the administrator to install, modify
or change settings for the Ethernet-connect module. The network manager
can also log on to the device over the network and, using a standard
Telnet application, open a terminal emulation session to install and
control the printer.

VPT 2 provides a number of enhancements over its predecessor. VPT 2 gives
the system administrator the ability to configure individual virtual
printers' input paper trays, paper size, page orientation, emulations,
duplex or simplex operation, paper output stacker, job priorities and a
wide variety of other configuration parameters. "VPT 2 adds a powerful,
new enhancement which has generated a great deal of excitement among
corporate network administrators who have been given a "sneak preview" of
Dataproducts' latest network connectivity design," Christian stated.

VPT 2 incorporates resource accounting by virtual printer. This feature
allows a network administrator to keep track of printer use for up to 64
individual users. Printers using VPT 2 can identify resources used by each
virtual printer so individual users or departments can be charged back for
the number of pages printed. This feature lets a network administrator
allocate operating costs according to individual or departmental use. It
can also be used as a powerful management tool to plan future printing
resources.

VPT 2 offers support for 22 popular network operating systems. Multiple
protocols, including DEC LAT, Unix TCP/IP, Novell IPX and Macintosh
Ethertalk are supported concurrently.
Christian noted that VPT 2 provides Dataproducts' customers with powerful,
common connectivity across all network-attached printers. This central
concept, combined with its wide range of printers and worldwide technical
support capabilities, allows Dataproducts to provide its rapidly-growing
customer base with a complete solution: the product to fit the need,
common connectivity and worldwide technical support.

"Our goal is to ensure that our customers have no reason to purchase a
printer from any vendor other than Dataproducts. We believe VPT 2 will
help us achieve that goal," noted Christian.
