EXABYTE UNVEILS NEW 7-GIGABYTE 8MM TAPE DRIVE, OFFERING NEARLY DOUBLE THE
CAPACITY OF 4MM DDS-2 DRIVES

Exabyte Adds 160m XL 8mm Data Cartridge to EXATAPE Media Line

BOULDER, Colo., June 1, 1994 -- Exabyte Corp. (NASDAQ:EXBT) today
introduced the EXB-8505XL 8mm Cartridge Tape Subsystem, extending the
capacity of the EXB-8505. The new tape storage device is priced the same
as the EXB-8505, introduced in September 1992.

A 5.25-inch half-high 8mm tape drive, the EXB-8505XL offers 40 percent more
capacity than the popular EXB-8505. Using extended-length media, the drive
records 7 gigabytes of uncompressed data per cartridge at 30 megabytes per
minute. The EXB-8505 stores 5 gigabytes of uncompressed data. With
standard hardware data compression, which typically doubles capacity and
transfer rate, the EXB-8505XL can record 14 gigabytes of data at 1
megabyte per second.

The EXB-8505XL offers full read-and-write compatibility with Exabyte's
entire family of high-performance 8mm helical-scan tape subsystems,
addressing the high-capacity storage requirements of midrange systems,
workstations and PC LANS.

"We're pleased to provide our current 8mm customers with a migration path
that gives them an additional 2 gigabytes of storage capacity for the same
price as the EXB-8505," said Peter D. Behrendt, Exabyte chairman of the
board, president and chief executive officer. "This increase provides
users with almost twice the capacity offered by current 4mm DDS-2 tape
drives."

EXB-8505XL Uses EXATAPE 160m XL 8mm Data-Grade Media

Like previous-generation 8mm drives, the EXB-8505XL uses 8mm datagrade
metal particle media designed specifically for 8mm tape storage
subsystems. Unlike other 8mm drives, the EXB-8506XL uses EXATAPE 160m XL
8mm media to achieve its higher capacities. Thinner than 112m, 54m and 15m
media, EXATAPE 160m XL 8mm media offers EXB-8505XL users greater capacity
with the same exceptional recording characteristics, durability and
archivability. The EXATAPE 160m XL 8mm media is designed only for use in
the EXB-8505XL. The EXB-8505XL is capable of reading and writing to all
other data-grade 8mm media including 112m, 54m and 15m media.

The new EXATAPE 160m XL 8mm data cartridge joins the Exabyte lineup of 8mm,
4mm and quarter-inch minicartridge media and supplies. All EXATAPE data
cartridges carry the Exabyte-certified supplies seal of quality for use in
data recording.

MTBF Doubles to 160,000 Hours

In a separate release today, Exabyte announced that it has doubled the
mean-time-between-failure (MTBF) specification on its entire 8mm half-high
family of products, including the EXB-8505XL. Based upon actual field
return data, Exabyte is increasing the MTBF specification to 160,000
hours, up 100 percent from 80,000 hours. Combined with an unrecoverable
bit error rate of less than one in 1017 bits read, these half-high drives
offer unsurpassed reliability.

Minor Modifications to Deck Assembly

Exabyte made minor deck changes to the EXB-8505XL to accommodate the new
EXATAPE 160m XL 8mm media. These modifications affect the tape load/unload
function only; the head-to-tape interface remains the same. Other changes
include process, production and reliability improvements.

The EXB-8505XL contains onboard error correction and error recovery as well
as full read-after-write verification. In addition, the EXB-8505XL is
SCSI-2 compatible and can be configured for synchronous or asynchronous
transfer. It comes with a two-year warranty.

The EXB-8505XL Ups the Capacity Ante of 8mm Libraries

Like the EXB-8205 and EXB-8505 half-high 8mm drives, the new EXB-8505XL is
designed for easy integration into Exabyte's family of half-high
libraries. When configured with EXB-8505XL tape drives, instead of
EXB-8505s, the EXB-210 8mm Library, which is now shipping, will provide 70
gigabytes of uncompressed automated storage, boosting storage by 40
percent.

When EXB-8505XL tape drives are incorporated into the EXB-480 8mm Library,
uncompressed storage reaches 560 gigabytes, up from 400 gigabytes when
configured with EXB-8505s.

The EXB-8505XL is shipping now to original equipment manufacturers and
system integrators, and will be available through distribution in July.
The EXB-8505XL is priced the same as the 5-gigabyte EXB-8505.

Headquartered in Boulder, Colo., Exabyte Corp. designs, manufactures and
