Gateway 2000 next generation HandBook jumps '250 hurdle'

Fastest subnotebook packs DX2-50 processor, 250MB hard drive into 2.9
pounds

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D., June 28, 1994 - Gateway 2000 today introduced the
third generation and most powerful version yet of its 2.9-pound HandBook.
The HandBook DX2-50, featuring an enhanced motherboard design, has the
fastest processor and largest capacity hard drive of any subnotebook
computer on the market. Available immediately starting at $2,499, the
HandBook DX2-50 packs an Intel 50MHz DX2 processor and a 250MB hard drive
into a package measuring only 9.75" x 5.9" x 1.6". It also boasts an
improved 2500 mAh battery pack that provides up to 15 percent more
on-the-road operating time than previous batteries. The company also
introduced the HandBook 486SX-33, priced at $1,299, with 4MB RAM and 130MB
hard drive.

"The HandBook is the smallest Windows PC in the world, and the DX2-50 model
is by far the most powerful system in its class," said Ted Waitt, chairman
and CEO of Gateway 2000. "We listened to feedback from our customers. They
wanted a larger hard drive, a faster processor and longer battery life
With the HandBook DX2-50, they get exactly that. We asked them what
accessories they're most likely to use. They said a spare battery,
external floppy drive and carrying case. We've included those in the
standard package at significant savings to customers. Our newest HandBooks
round out the family to give customers a complete range of choices at
unbeatable price-performance values "

The HandBook DX2-50 is the highest performance member of the family, which
also includes the HandBook DX2-40, the HandBook 486SX-33 and the HandBook
486SX-25. With the introduction of the HandBook DX2-50 and HandBook
486SX-33, Gateway significantly reduced the prices of the HandBook
486SX-25, which now starts at $999, and the HandBook DX2-40, which now
starts at $1,499.

"The HandBook is the ideal PC for running Windows-based applications on the
road," Waitt added. "I carry one just about everywhere I go. It's the best
value for a portable in any price range."

Both new HandBooks come standard with an external floppy drive, two NiMH
batteries, carrying case and preloaded software. They also include the
integrated EZ Point pointing device, a floppy drive/parallel port and
printer adapter, serial port and PS/2-style external keyboard connector.
The display is a bright, 7.9" diagonal backlighted LCD. ALL HandBooks have
a suspend-resume feature that lets the user shut down the system, then
later return to the exact application spot with a single keystroke.

PCMCIA Features

The HandBook sports a Type II PCMCIA expansion slot that supports "hot
swapping," the ability to insert or remove PCMCIA devices without
rebooting. Gateway offers PCMCIA peripherals including an external VGA
adapter, 14.4bps and 9600/2400bps fax/modems, Token Ring and Ethernet
network adapters.

Battery Charging

The HandBook battery can be fast-charged outside of the unit without the
aid of a cradle, a valuable feature missing from most other portables.
Batteries are fast-charged during operation and can be hotswapped without
exiting the current application. The DX2-50 model includes two batteries,
so the user can charge one while using the other.

Software and Support

The HandBook DX2-50 comes with MS-DOS 6.22, Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and
Microsoft Office Pro. The HandBook SX-33 has MS Works instead of Office
Pro. Complete documentation and diskettes are also included.

Gateway supports the HandBook with a toll-free telephone line exclusively
for portable products, staffed by technicians extensively trained on the
HandBook. The support lines are open from 6:00 a.m to midnight weekdays
and from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00p.m. Saturdays.

Gateway also provides a toll-free line for downloading software updates and
several online support options, including an electronic bulletin board
system and a CompuServe forum.

Portable products are covered by a 30-day money-back guarantee and a
one-year limited warranty, which includes onsite service when deemed
necessary by a Gateway technician.
