IBM PC SERVERS TO SUPPORT OS/2 FOR SMP

NEW YORK, June 28, 1994 . . . In a technology demonstration of
multiprocessing here at PC Expo, IBM showcased a prototype PC-based server
designed to support OS/2 for Symmetrical Multiprocessing (OS/2 for SMP).

"SMP technology will provide customers in compute-intensive environments
with the ability to run applications faster and more efficiently," said
Michael R. Coleman, general manager, PC Servers. "We're committed to
bringing multiprocessing capabilities to customers in various market
segments, with PC server solutions that marry hardware and software by
exploiting viable operating systems like OS/2 for SMP, database
applications such as IBM's DB2/2, and management expertise via our
NetFinity platform."

At PC Expo, IBM demonstrated an implementation of the 32-bit OS/2 for SMP
operating system on a prototype PC server using 90MHz Pentium
dual-processor technology. This industry-standard prototype server is
designed for customers in enterprise local area networks who want to take
advantage of cost-effective multiprocessing primarily on file and
application servers.

With OS/2 for SMP, users can harness the power of their multiprocessing
hardware by benefiting from scalable performance. OS/2 for SMP maintains
customers' investments in existing software and provides the ability to
support SMP-enabled hardware, such as the prototype PC server.

Headquartered in Armonk, N.Y., IBM is one of the industry's leading vendors
of personal computers. IBM introduced the first PC to use the x86
architecture in August 1981, and helped spawn the multibillion-dollar
personal computer industry. Today, the company develops, manufactures,
markets and distributes a variety of PCs -- from subnotebooks to high-end
servers -- as well as a line of monitors, peripherals and accessories in
more than 140 countries worldwide.
