NEW CD JUKEBOX FOR WINDOWS OFFERS ON-LINE ACCESS TO 60 GIGABYTES

ROCHESTER, N.Y., June 28--A new compact disc library from Eastman Kodak
Company makes it possible for Microsoft Windows users to gain online
access to as many as 100 CDs containing up to 60 gigabytes of information,
or 10,000 Photo CD images.

First introduced in a Macintosh version last year, the Kodak Professional
Image Library 30 accepts CDs in virtually any standard format, including
Photo CD, CD-ROM, CD-ROM XA, CD-I and Kodak Writable CD.

The new library system is designed to make it easy for customers to manage
and store information in a variety of applications, from stock
photography, newspaper, and museum archives, to law enforcement and
medical record keeping. The system itself consists of three parts:

* The Kodak PCD professional jukebox 100, an automated disc
library about the size of a small microwave oven
* Kodak jukebox manager (JBM) software, which manages stored
media and directs the operation of the library's robotics and
  double-speed, multisession drive
* Information management software, which lets users catalog,
index, search and retrieve images and other information
  automatically

The jukebox holds two removable magazines at a time, each of which can
carry 50 discs. Thanks to a relational database built into the JBM
software, users can track as many as 2400 discs--or 1,440 gigabytes of
information-stored in magazines off-line.

Using Kodak Shoebox image manager software, included in the system, the
library allows search and retrieval of Photo CD, TIFF, PCX, BMP, TGA, WPG
and GIF formats, as well as WAV audio files. This makes it ideal for users
who produce multimedia programs and other image-intensive projects.

In addition to Shoebox, the library is compatible with any Windows database
software that uses DDE (dynamic data exchange).

About The System

To access information stored on the library, users simply sit at their
desktop computers and use their database software to establish search
parameters, which are based on keywords or special attributes. To find an
image using Shoebox software, for example, the keyword might be
"baseball," an attribute, "shot on Ektachrome film."

Based on criteria defined by the user, Shoebox searches the database,
displaying low-resolution thumbnails of the images that match. This step
is fast: The system can search 10,000 thumbnail images in 10 seconds or
less.

Once the user chooses an image, jukebox manager software locates the
appropriate disc. A robotic mechanism loads the disc into the unit's CD
drive, which reads the selected image file within a few seconds.

The image then can be viewed, exported to another application, or output to
a peripheral, such as a printer. JBM software takes full advantage of the
Windows interface, offering complete point-and-click functionality.

When images are retrieved from a Photo CD disc, users can select from any
of the multiple resolutions stored on the disc--from thumbnail for
previewing to full resolution for photographic quality printing and
enlargements.

The Professional Image Library 30 is compatible with IBM PC 386 or 486
machines (and compatibles) running Windows 3.1 or higher. The library also
requires 8 MB of RAM and a hard drive of at least 30 MB.

The new library system is available today. The suggested retail price is
$9,995.
