Lotus Extends Groupware Standard with New Application Development Tools,
Programs to Support Business Process Applications

New York, June 28, 1994 -- Lotus Development Corp. has outlined a strategy
aimed at providing customers and partners with a set of software products,
tools, programs and services designed to speed and ease the deployment of
business process applications based on Lotus Notes.

Notes is Lotus' market-leading platform for developing and deploying
groupware applications. It is used by nearly one million people to support
a wide range of strategic business processes, such as customer support,
sales and account management and product development. Today, Lotus
announced Lotus Notes ViP, a new visual programming environment that
extends the range of Notes applications and users, at a briefing held in
conjunction with the PC Expo show and conference. Lotus also announced
NotesSQL, designed to broaden the types of software products that can
access, query and report on information stored in Notes databases.
Finally, Lotus outlined a unified program, new toolkits and a new way of
delivering tools for its more than 4,200 third-party partners building
solutions and services based on Lotus products. Twenty Lotus Business
Partners announced new products and services designed to work with Notes,
using Notes ViP, NotesSQL and other Lotus technologies.

According to John Landry, senior vice president and chief technologist at
Lotus, "Lotus Notes has become an industry standard because it provides
customers with proven returns on their investments. Notes is more than
information exchange -- it's a platform for developing and deploying
strategic business process applications. Today, we're extending the
standard with new tools that enable Notes applications to be deployed
faster, with access to all types of data sources."

"Today's announcements strengthen Lotus' commitment to customers and
partners building strategic business process applications in several key
areas," Landry said. "Notes ViP brings a powerful visual application
development tool to Notes; NotesSQL enables ODBC-compliant applications to
access information managed in Notes; and for the thousands of Business
Partners already building Notes solutions, we're offering an even broader
range of services and tools to support them in helping us to build a
robust industry around Notes."

Lotus also announced this week it will ship Lotus Forms beginning in July.
This new solution for developers is designed for building, routing and
tracking sophisticated forms across the heterogeneous, extended
enterprise. Also announced this week, Lotus will begin shipments in August
of SmartSuite 3.0, an updated version of its desktop applications suite.
Included are new versions of Lotus 1-2-3 and Lotus Approach, the top-rated
Windows product for end-user database application development without
programming.

"Our strategy is to provide an open business process application
development environment that enables customers -- from end users to
professional programmers and commercial developers -- to use a range of
applications and tools, according to their own choice," said Landry.

Lotus solutions extend from SmartSuite applications on the desktop tightly
integrated with Notes through technologies such as Notes/FX, to the Notes
integrated groupware application development environment, which includes
database, development language, application templates and full access to
system-level services. Now with Notes ViP, developers can create custom
graphical interfaces to Notes applications or easily customize and enhance
their own Notes applications with LotusScript, Lotus' BASIC-compatible
scripting language.
