FREMONT, Calif. -- May 10, 1994 -- A serial I/O card in PCMCIA format has
been developed by Smart Modular Technologies Inc. for use in any
sub-notebook, PDA, palmtop computer or other host system equipped with a
Type II slot.

Providing a fully functional high-speed serial port, the new card offers
compatibility with all DOS and Windows-based software and connects to all
standard serial peripherals.

Concentrating its new-product development on solutions for the
mobile-computing market, Smart Modular Tech is a six-year-old producer of
memory and upgrade cards for most types of portable digital systems. The
company's new serial I/O card joins a full complement of more than 50
different types of fax/modems, DRAM, SRAM, pseudo-static RAM, flash, OTP
and mask ROM cards that comply fully with PCMCIA Release 2.1 standards.
All of the company's products are designed and manufactured in company
owned facilities in Fremont, California.

The new serial I/O card includes an internally buffered 16550 UART and an
8530 USART, a combination that provides the flexibility of either
asynchronous or synchronous communication. It also provides the
flexibility of configuring the asynchronous port as COM 1, 2 3, or 4,
while the synchronous port is fully programmable. Use of the software
provided eliminates the need to set any jumpers.

"Many small systems -- including sub-notebooks, PDAs and palmtop computers
-have only one COM port, if any, and it is usually occupied," said Bill
Johnston, director of marketing for Smart Modular Technologies.
"Configured as an asynchronous port, our new serial I/O card allows the
user to connect his or her system to external peripherals, such as
printers, scanners, test equipment or IC programmers. The synchronous
configuration will allow high-speed data transfers with mainframes."

The card is ideal for applications for 3270, SNA, and is HDLC, SDLC and
BISYNC compatible. It is also compatible with 3270 remote and Irma remote
applications. It can run interrupt-driven, or polled with programmable
IRQs.

The card's power-down mode conserves power and extends battery life when
not in use. In the "standby" mode, power is removed from most of the
card's internal circuitry. This mode is entered when no activity has been
detected for a period of time. The "sleep" mode allows the host computer
effectively to turn off the card's power completely. This mode is entered
and exited on command through the PCMCIA interface under control of the
host computer.

Made in the U.S.

An early member of the PC Memory Card International Association, SMART
Modular Technologies, Inc. designs, manufactures, and markets
application-specific and custom, high-capacity modules and cards that meet
standards set by the PC Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA).

Manufactured in the U.S., the company's products expand the functionality
of portable data systems -- including palmtop, notebook and laptop
computers -- as well as workstations, desktop computers and
telecommunications systems.
