Media-Independent Design Made Possible with New Pantone Cross-Referencing
Software

New utility enables the cross-referencing of PANTONE Print, Textile and
Plastics Color Systems

PC EXPO, New York, NY June 28, 1994 (Booth #409) -- Pantone, Inc. is
exhibiting the PANTONE Color Systems Cross-Reference, the color software
utility which helps users identify the closest corresponding color across
all the PANTONE Color Systems for the graphic arts, industrial design,
home furnishings and fashion industries.

The PANTONE Color Systems Cross-Reference software allows users to select
any color From any of the PANTONE Color Systems (PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM,
PANTONE Pastel Colors, PANTONE PROCESS Color System, PANTONE TEXTILE Color
System and PANTONE PLASTICS Color System) and will display the closest
corresponding color from each of the other systems. The software assigns a
quality rating based on how closely the colors match in the selected
medium.

PANTONE Color Systems help people achieve accurate color in a wide variety
of media including print (process or solid color), plastics and textiles.
Cross-Reference allows the user to easily navigate through PANTONE Color
Systems by automating a process that until now had to be done manually.

Why Cross-Referencing is Important

The design world has changed in the 90s, with designers branching out
beyond traditional methods in order to maintain a competitive edge," said
Richard Herbert, vice president of Pantone's Electronic Color Systems
Division. "They are increasingly working with many different kinds of
media. and they need to be able to cross-reference their colors for the
best possible match. In addition to supporting that need, our new software
will enhance communication between designers and suppliers, and bring more
color cohesion between internal design and production departments.

Increased Productivity and Confidence

The PANTONE Color Systems Cross-Reference software eases the development of
'color coordinated' products. It eliminates the need to search manually
through different systems looking for a close match. As the
cross-references have been made by Pantone, designers have the added
confidence of knowing that the closeness of the cross-references is very
high. The software will also indicate those colors for which
cross-references are non-existent. It will assist a designer in making a
major printing decision. for example. comparing the closeness of a color's
appearance on coated or uncoated stock.

The PANTONE Color Systems Cross-Reference software is designed for graphic
designers and illustrators, pre-press shops, printers, textile
designers/converters, industrial designers, interior designers and
architects. It allows users to select any color from any PANTONE Color
System on screen and automatically displays the closest match possible
from each of the other systems.

In addition to showing the closest color match among systems, the PANTONE
Color Systems Cross-Reference software assigns a quality rating to each
match to provide the user with an idea of how close the correlation is
when visually comparing physical samples of printed colors. textiles or
plastics.

What Users Say

Anne Occi, vice president of design services at Major League Baseball
Properties, explains the importance of the Cross-Reference software in
color research and planning. "Cross-Reference enables us to provide better
support to companies that manufacture products under license from Major
League Baseball. We keep them up to date by tracking fashion and color
trends and showing how baseball logos and marks can work within the latest
fashion concepts. Obviously. selecting colors which can be translated into
a variety of materials is essential for these presentations.
Cross-Reference lets us see the choices quickly and easily. It takes the
guesswork out of the job."

System Requirements, Availability and Pricing

The PANTONE Color Systems Cross-Reference software will run on both the
Macintosh and Microsoft Windows operating systems. For Windows,
requirements include an IBM-compatible system with Windows 3.1 or higher,
4MB RAM and a hard drive. For the Macintosh, requirements include a
Macintosh running System 7.0 or higher, a color monitor, 2MB RAM and a
hard drive. The PANTONE Color Systems Cross-Reference software began
shipping this month at a list price of $129.00.

Pantone, Inc., the leading source of products for the communication of
accurate color, is the developer of the PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM and the
PANTONE PROCESS Color System, two distinct global languages for color
specification and reproduction. Pantone. Inc. is headquartered in
Carlstadt. New Jersey.
