Design Book Designed For Non-Designers

May 1994--Berkeley, CA--Judging by the proliferation of desktop publishing
systems in homes and offices, a new book by Robin Williams (of Little Mac
Book fame) would appear to have quite a sizable market. Ms. Williams says
she wrote The Non-Designer's Design Book (Peachpit Press, $14.99) "for all
the people who are now in a position of designing pages, but who have no
background or formal training in design"--such as the secretary laying out
an office newsletter, the entrepreneur designing her own advertising, the
student wanting a better-looking term paper, or the professional creating
a lasting impression with a new client. As a book of general design
principles, it doesn't matter what computer one is using, or whether one
is using a computer at all--the principles and terminology of good design
remain the same.

Ms. Williams assumes that readers simply want to know how to make pages
look better. She equips them with four basic concepts used in virtually
every well-designed job: contrast, repetition, alignment and proximity
(quite an acronym). Dozens of real-world examples enliven the text and
show that Robin practices what she preaches: good design does indeed
capture the reader's attention.

In the second half, the focus is on type, specifically the benefits and
problems of combining multiple typefaces. Here Ms. Williams demonstrates
that in page design, as in life, relationships between elements are either
concordant, or conflicting, or contrasting.

Each chapter is conveniently summarized, and the book is full of practical
design exercises and optional quizzes, plus a bibliography. Throughout,
readers are encouraged to feel at ease in the of ten confusing world of
graphic design.

Ms. Williams' clear, accessible style has made her popular with hundreds of
thousands of readers worldwide--both for the Mac and PC. In addition to
The Little Mac Book, Robin's bestsellers include The PC is not a
typewriter, The Mac is not a typewriter, and PageMaker 4: An Easy Desk
Reference (Mac and PC versions) and Tabs and Indents on the Mac. Her
recent books, Jargon and How to Boss Your Fonts Around were introduced by
Peachpit to rave reviews. Peachpit's PageMaker 5 Companion (Mac ed.), of
which Robin is the major author, will be published in June 1994. Over
600,000 copies of Robin's books are in print worldwide. She resides in
Santa Fe with her three kids and menagerie.
