New Modem with DTE Speeds up to 230.4Kbps Introduced by Practical
Peripherals

THOUSAND OAKS, CALIFORNIA -- Practical Peripherals announces a new
28,800bps V.FAST Class modem supporting DTE (computer to modem) speeds up
to 230,400bps, allowing the fastest possible throughput available.

Practical's ProClass 288SA is able to achieve this high DTE rate using
enhanced V.42bis data compression techniques when coupled with the
ProClass High Speed Serial Port. Engineered especially for high-volume
datacom users, data transfer rates over 1 megabyte per minute are
possible.

The ProClass 288SA will communicate with modems from other manufacturers
utilizing V.FAST Class technology from Rockwell at speeds from 28,800bps
down to 14,400bps. The ProClass 288SA is also compatible with modems
utilizing ITU-T V.32bis protocol from 14,400bps down to Bell 103 at
300bps.

This asynchronous/synchronous modem supports the Hayes Standard AT Command
Set, Hayes AutoSync and enhanced modulation techniques, such as multi-
dimensional trellis coding. Offering Class I send/receive fax at speeds up
to 14,400bps, the ProClass 288SA also features V.42 error control,
distinctive ring detection, telephone calling card (bong) tone
recognition, and eight status lights.

The ProClass 288SA has a suggested retail price of $499. Both WinFax Lite
and Quick Link II Windows and DOS data and fax communications software
come with this modem. It also includes Practical's lifetime limited
warranty.

After the V.34 standard is ratified by the ITU-T and Practical introduces
its V.34 products, the ProClass 288SA will be factory-upgradable from V.FC
to V.34 for $89.

ProClass High Speed Serial Port

Practical's ProClass High Speed Serial Port is an ultra-fast, buffered
serial port that enhances modem performance. Although this internal card
provides DTE rates up to 230,400bps in Windows when used with the ProClass
288SA modem, it will also enhance performance of other external modems
supporting V.34, V.FAST Class, V.32 terbo, V.32bis and V.32 protocols in
DOS, Windows and UNIX platforms that utilize slower serial ports (8450,
16450 UART). It is backward-compatible to 16550 UART emulation and
115,200bps for programs not using a Windows communication driver.

The ProClass High Speed Serial Port's dual 1,024 byte (1K) buffer, 256
times larger than standard serial card buffers, reducing the PC's workload
and thereby improving file transfer, background or multi-tasking
performance. Another valuable feature is its flexible 16 or 8-bit bus
interface.

Practical's ProClass High Speed Serial Port (PC-HSSP) has a suggested
retail list price of $89 and is scheduled for shipment in April.
