Statement to Accompany Computers for Bosnia:

This is a city under siege. The shells have stopped raining from the sky,
yet the siege remains. It is a siege on the psyche and souls of the people
of Sarajevo. The whole world watches an atrocity, but we do not watch with
idle hands.

The East West Foundation was born of the American computer industry, that
we might send our revolutionary technology where it can make a difference,
and in Sarajevo one computer can make a difference.

Computers do not stop bullets. They do not fight battles. Yet, they are the
technology of freedom. They permit their user to write, think and
communicate. A citizen of Sarajevo, with a computer and modem, is a world
citizen. Their thoughts are free and no siege can stop that freedom.
Databits don't see bullets or tanks, they go right past them.

We want to make free thought, and free speech a restored right in Sarajevo.
Americans believe when people are free to express their minds, a righteous
path of truth emerges through open communication.

We have brought this group of computer systems to help lift the siege on
the spirit of this city. They are destined upon the city's last operating
newspaper, Oslobodjene, the city's radio station, Radio Zid, the
International Peace Center, and the Obala Theater. They are institutions
at the core of the city's soul. They nurture its spirit and keep it
alive.

We bring these computers to do what computers can - open the channels of
communication, liberate the minds of these besieged people, and give this
city a renewed burst of hope. Let them write the saga of Sarajevo and tell
it to the world.
