RE-BOOT LOCKED-UP ROUTERS AND OTHER REMOTE ACCESS EQUIPMENT WITH THE SENTRY
REMOTE POWER MANAGER

Sunnyvale, CA. June 10,1994 -- Any network system administrator knows, the
number one reason for a Wide Area Network failure is the lockup of a
mission critical Router. Because many lock-ups cannot be cleared with the
router's software re-boot command, a power cycle re-boot is required. The
classic method to correct such a lockup is to dispatch a person to flip
the "Big Red Power Switch off and then on to reboot the router. However,
if no one is immediately available to dispatch, or if the router is in a
geographically distant location, the WAN can be down for an extended
period of time.

The alternative is to install a companion Sentry Remote Power Manager with
every mission critical router. The Sentry product is a remote
communication/power control unit that provides password secure power
on/off REBOOT control to geographically distinct network devices. The
installation of a Sentry Remote Power Manager with each mission critical
router will shorten the recovery process and reduce network downtime.
Since time is money, the Sentry Remote Power Manager can save an
organization thousands of dollars.

How The Sentry Remote Power Manager Works:

Sentry is a micro-processor based, intelligent controller that communicates
ASCII screens with a calling PC. The screen interface allows the Sentry
user to control up to four companion power modules. These power modules
are plugged into 110 VAC outlets. One network device's power cord is
plugged into each power module. By signaling the power module, Sentry can
power-on, power-off or re-boot the remote network device.

Sentry is accessed through a modem call. Once the call is answered, the
Sentry unit responds with a "Password Screen" which requests the calling
PC user to enter a PASSWORD. After the password is validated by the
Sentry, it responds by displaying the "Power Control Screen" on the
calling PC. The "Power Control Screen" provides the user of the calling PC
an interface to individually control the AC power flow to the four Power
Modules. Each module is associated with a specific, remote device and
provides control over its AC power flow. By remotely toggling the
power-off and then toggling the power-on, the remote device is re-BOOTED,
removing the error condition. The re-BOOT operation allows the network
support staff to quickly return a remote device to an operational mode.
