SMI Brings Mapping to Mainstream Software With AtlasMap Viewer

Strategic Mapping Acquires TerraLogics, Unveils OLE 2.0 Mapping Toolkit

Santa Clara, Calif., May 31, 1994--Strategic Mapping, Inc. (SMI) has
acquired TerraLogics, Inc. (Lowell, Mass.), a leader in object linking and
embedding (OLE) mapping applications. As a result, SMI will immediately
begin offering a new line of products to enable mapping and data display
functions to be embedded in spreadsheets, client-server databases and
other mainstream software.

Called AtlasMap Viewer, the new SMI product allows developers of virtually
any off-the-shelf package to add the capability to visualize information
geographically on any platform, such as Windows, UNIX or Macintosh. Users
can display their data on digital maps at the click of a single button.
AtlasMap Viewer can be used to create simple presentations, such as
company sales performance by territory, or display more sophisticated
relationships such as demographic and product sales trends. The results
are shaded-area or "pin" maps which use patterns or symbols to display the
attached information.

SMI also unveiled co-marketing agreements with several top-tier software
vendors including Lotus, Gupta and Powersoft who will begin incorporating
mapping technology into their products and/or offering the technology to
their customers for development. One of the largest providers of marketing
information, IRI Software, has already announced plans to build vertical
applications based on the AtlasMap Viewer technology.

"AtlasMap Viewer takes an important step toward expanding the market for
mapping by making it a part of the applications that are already on the
user's desktop," said Kathey Hale, senior analyst for Dataquest. "SMI is
leading the way in bringing this technology to mainstream business users
with an approach not pursued by any of its competitors."

Unlike standalone desktop mapping applications, AtlasMap Viewer appears as
a function within a familiar application and does not require the user to
learn a separate interface. Instead, it can be adapted to conform to the
menu bar and interface standards of virtually any popular program, such as
a database or spreadsheet.

Using OLE 2.0 technology, developers can build applications that let users
display and analyze data from three sources: the user's own corporate
database; demographic and geographic data built into embedded mapping
applications; and external data sources.

SMI has established a marketing and support program called the Open Mapping
Interface (OMI) in which desktop mapping software will become
interoperable regardless of which manufacturer implements the mapping
functionality. SMI will create linkages between its off-the shelf packages
and the embedded mapping functions found inside applications from Lotus
and other mainstream manufacturers.

Unlike previous standardization initiatives, SMI will not dictate the
look-and-feel of the mapping object, but will instead work with each of
manufacturer to tailor implementations to fit established standards within
that company's suite of applications programs.

MapViewer Brings New Functionality, Content to Mainstream Software

AtlasMap Viewer is an OLE 2.0-compatible library that enables data
visualization and geographic analysis capabilities to be embedded into the
source code of database, spreadsheet, desktop publishing and presentation
packages and many vertical applications. The utility will allow products
such as Borland's Quatro Pro, Lotus 1-2-3 and Microsoft Excel, among
others, to add menu commands for users to visualize their data on digital
maps and easily perform geographic analysis at the click of a single
button.

The technology allows numerous types of content -- including a wide
selection of the geographic, demographic and economic data files from SMI
-- to be embedded into an application. Geographic files can be states,
counties, ZIP codes, census tracts, etc. Demographic data such as
population, income, age, etc. for each type of geography are also
included. Users can tie their own data into any level of geography and map
it out, or create maps based on the pre-packaged demographic SMI data. In
addition, users can optionally choose from a number of add-on market- and
product-specific data files SMI offers, including Market Potential,
Product Potential, updated demographics, lifestyle segmentation
(ClusterPLUS 2000), business listings (Dun's BusinessLine), financial
service usage (WealthWISE) and many others.

Built-In Support for Client/Server Databases

A key feature of AtlasMap Viewer is that it enables built-in support for
client-server databases, such as those from PowerSoft and Gupta
Corporation. The data resides in the host application and AtlasMap Viewer
is used for display purposes. Edits are saved back to the original file
automatically. Most stand-alone mapping software applications require the
user to write queries from a client-server database and export them to
access data. (Users still have the option of exporting files to SMI's
standalone desktop mapping software program, Atlas GIS, to perform more
in-depth geographic analysis.)

Single Program - Multiple Platforms, Applications and Advantages

Until now, most corporate decision makers required a dedicated mapping
software program to analyze spatial relationships. SMI is now offering the
first complete system which fits in with existing interface standards (via
its OMI developer program), is available for OEM licensing and is
accessible and practical from an end user's perspective. Users can take
advantage of the expanded capabilities built-in to their core packages
without launching a separate program, reducing the number of packages they
need to purchase, install and learn.
