Strategic Mapping Introduces First Desktop Mapping Software With Built-In
Client/Server Support

Atlas GIS for Windows 2.0 Offers SQL Connectivity, Nationwide Geocoding,
Visual Basic Customization Toolkit

Santa Clara, Calif., April 15, 1994--Strategic Mapping, Inc. (SMI) today
introduced Atlas GIS for Windows 2.0, the first desktop mapping software
to offer built in SQL connectivity for users in client/server and
workgroup computing environments. The product also provides a unique
approach to nationwide geocoding by address or ZIP+4 code, key
presentation features such as multiple map insets, a customization toolkit
based on Microsoft Visual Basic and advanced geographic analysis
capabilities such as complex "donut" buffering and the ability to assign
data from one feature or layer to another.

First Mapping Software with Built-In Support For Client/Server Databases

"Strategic Mapping is setting the stage for desktop mapping software to
become tightly integrated into corporate computing environments where
client/server databases are a key component," said Michele Gottlieb,
product marketing manager for SMI. "Using Atlas SQLink, a unique feature
within Atlas GIS for Windows 2.0, users can connect directly to host
databases, and issue and store queries which can be processed by virtually
any SQL DBMS."

The results of a query can then be downloaded directly into Atlas GIS where
users can view, analyze and present information on a map, adding a
dimension that goes beyond standard DBMS capabilities. Applications range
from analyzing sales performance, to resource allocation, distribution
planning and other ongoing tasks.

The ability to understand and integrate a variety of data sets is key in
workgroup applications where users need to easily download, display and
analyze information from multiple departments. Atlas GIS for Windows 2.0
is the first product of its kind with built-in SQL connectivity.

Nationwide, CD-based Geocoding

One of the key features of Atlas GIS for Windows 2.0 is an innovative
approach to geocoding. A single CD contains all U.S. street address
segments and ZIP+4 locations. Users can rapidly and accurately append
latitude/longitude coordinates and census tracts or block groups to
database records containing addresses. This method is far superior to
other methods which typically process only one county at a time, making
national geocoding difficult and slow.

The Atlas GIS geocoding database is optional and can be operated from a
hard drive or CD-ROM drive in interactive or batch mode. Users can
purchase national or regional units (states and counties).

Extensive Presentation Tools

New presentation features give users the option to create multiple maps or
insets. Each inset or map view can be individually displayed, labeled,
zoomed and modified. A custom symbol capability allows scalable bitmap
images--such as company logos--to be tied to features on the map.

Label management has also been enhanced. Users can edit, move, rotate or
hide individual map labels to create custom map presentations. Part or all
of a map can be printed or exported via the clipboard to another Windows
application. In addition, users can easily create reports by exporting
data tables as .dbf files. Alternatively, they can copy and paste data
variables and column headings via the clipboard to any Windows-based
report writing program or spreadsheet.

Advanced Geographic Analysis

Atlas GIS for Windows 2.0 adds significant new geographic analysis and
editing capabilities, including commands to aggregate and assign data by
location. For example, with one command, a group of customers can be
assigned to a sales representative in a territory. Competing packages
require individual customer records to be edited one at a time. Likewise,
a single command can "disperse" points that fall on top of one another so
the user can view them.

Version 2.0 can build "donut" buffers around points to create several
concentric trade areas. Data tied to map features (points, lines or areas)
can be aggregated in one of several ways--sum, average or weighted
average. This results in more accurate data which is critical for
applications such as trade area analysis, sales territory design, target
marketing and site selection.

Built-in Database

An advanced database design links multiple tables to any type of geography.
Users can open any Lotus 1-2-3, Microsoft Excel or dBASE-compatible file
and link it to the map. Data is organized into separate tables for each
layer, making it easier to view, query and comprehend.

Layer Management

A unique layer management system allows users to click directly on-screen
to change colors, settings, styles, visibility, and more. Version 2.0 also
lets users easily move or copy individual map features from one layer to
another.

Visual Basic and C Customization/Programming Toolkits

Two optional application programming interfaces (APIs), based on
industry-standard programming languages, make it easy to create customized
vertical market solutions. Atlas Script/VB and Atlas Script/C integrate
Atlas GIS for Windows 2.0 functionality into Visual Basic, or C-based
Windows applications.

Valuable Marketing Data

A complete set of geographic and demographic data provides registered users
with valuable, current information at no additional charge. Files include
U.S. states, counties, interstate highways, telephone area codes,
three-digit ZIP codes (boundaries), five-digit ZIP codes (points),
metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs), Nielsen and Arbitron advertising
regions (ADIs and DMAs). Demographic data and projections (extending to
1998) cover population, income and ethnicity in each of the geographic
areas supplied, plus a sample of product and market potential data from
SMI's proprietary databases.

A specially designed international version of Atlas GIS for Windows is
available and includes detailed geographic and demographic data files for
areas throughout Western Europe. International data includes countries of
the world and major international cities.

Pricing and Availability

Atlas GIS for Windows 2.0 is available immediately for $1,595 (U.S). The
international version is priced at $1,995. 'LAN Paks' are also available,
priced at $3,595 for 3 users and $8,995 for 10 users.
