Strategic Mapping Builds Data and Maps into Lotus 1-2-3 Release 5

First Spreadsheet With Mapping Functionality, Business Data Built-In

Santa Clara, Calif., June 20, 1994 -- Strategic Mapping, Inc. (SMI) today
announced its mapping software application, geographic files and
demographic and business data have been built into Release 5 of Lotus
Development Corp.'s 1-2-3 spreadsheet. Called Lotus Maps, this new feature
in 1-2-3 was developed using SMI's OLE 2.0 tools and enables users to
create maps from virtually any data in their spreadsheets. The add-on data
sets, called Conquest Market Data, are available directly from SMI for 37
countries and multiple levels of geography.

"One of the primary design goals of 1-2-3 Release 5 for Windows is to
enhance the user's productivity and effectiveness," said Jeffrey Beir,
vice president of the Lotus spreadsheet and database division. "With the
Lotus Maps feature, users can easily create maps of
geographically-oriented data in their spreadsheets and present that data
more effectively. The product ships with a variety of worldwide maps and
data and offers Lotus users access to a complete set of integrated
geographic and demographic data sets."

Lotus 1-2-3 Release 5 for Windows will ship with regional-level maps of 18
countries and data that has been localized for each of seven languages
Japanese, English, Taiwanese, French, Italian, German, Spanish). Beyond
the data included with each package, SMI and Lotus will jointly market a
variety of pre-formatted, add-on datasets for users who want more detailed
demographics, finer levels of geography or industry/product-specific
information.

With Lotus Maps, users can select cells or columns within their
spreadsheet, click on a button and swiftly create a map that uses symbols
or shadings to represent the underlying data. Lotus Maps can be used to
create simple geographic presentations such as company sales performance
by territory or display more sophisticated relationships such as the
impact of demographics on product or brand usage. Typical applications
include sales results analysis, target marketing and resource allocation.

Components Included With Lotus Maps

All components necessary to use Lotus Maps are included in each 1-2-3
Release 5 for Windows package. The data fall into three categories:
geographic, demographic or business. The specific data variables in each
file depend on what is relevant for the geographic region. However, the
following is a general overview of the types of data and variables
included.

* Geographic files: Regional maps for the U.S. (state); Canada (province);
Europe (administrative boundary as defined by the European Union); Mexico
(state); Japan (prefecture); Australia (state); and Taiwan. Also included
are boundaries for all countries of the world and point locations for more
than 1,000 cities.

* Current Demographic data: Population counts by gender and age (with
percent change from past years and five-year projections); population
density (e.g. urban, rural); household income, number of persons per
household.

* Business data: Employment counts by full-time, part-time, gender, age,
income, industry/service sector. For most regions, statistics for 10
categories of businesses (e.g. manufacturing, transportation) are
included.

Conquest Market Data Available from SMI for Use with 1-2-3

In addition to the standard maps and data included in each package of Lotus
1-2-3, SMI is offering pre-packaged datasets with worldwide coverage.
Lotus 1-2-3 Release 5 users have the option of adding finer levels of
geography with detailed demographics and more extensive business data. For
instance, in the U.S., 1-2-3 Release 5 includes maps and data at the state
level, but users can add national, regional or state sets which show
5-digit ZIP code boundaries for greater detail. The U.S. prepackaged sets
include both maps and demographic/business data at the ZIP code level.
Users can also select from a wide range of other add-on datasets from
SMI's comprehensive catalog, including:

* Current demographics: contains detailed geography and demographics for
variables such as age, income and ethnicity, as appropriate for the
country/region.

* Business locations: contains listings and industry summary reports based
on over 10 million business establishments throughout the U.S. This
database is the most current, accurate and complete listing of businesses
in America today.

* Product potential: provides estimates of the potential number of users
for a variety of consumer products, categories, services, along with
information about shopping habits, media habits and attitudes.

* Market potential: includes detailed breakdowns of U.S. consumer spending
patterns, estimates and five-year projections for 21 retail store types
and 200+ product categories.

* Lifestyle segmentation: classifies the U.S. into 60 lifestyle segments
and uses household-level demographics and economics to indicate how
products will perform and how consumers will behave in the marketplace.

SMI's OLE 2.0 Toolkit Enables Mapping Functionality

SMI's AtlasMap Viewer product, an OLE 2.0 (Object Linking and Embedding)
compatible library, is the underlying technology that enables data
visualization and geographic analysis capabilities along with geographic,
demographic and business data to be embedded into the source code of Lotus
1-2-3.

Single Application - Multiple Benefits

A key advantage of Lotus 1-2-3 Release 5 with this new capability is that
data can now be viewed and analyzed geographically without exporting it to
a separate desktop mapping software application. Previously, users needed
a dedicated mapping program to analyze and display their data, requiring
them to master additional programs, learn multiple user interfaces and
transfer information back and forth between databases. Additionally, the
cost of desktop mapping software, including geographic and data files, is
typically in excess of $1,000. Detailed data and geography add-on sets for
Lotus 1-2-3 Release 5 -- which sell for as little as $149 -- would
previously have cost ten times as much in a standalone desktop mapping
software program.

SMI will continue to focus on providing standalone desktop mapping
software, such as its Atlas GIS for Windows product, and now users can
share maps and information with a much wider group of people within their
organization since mapping will be built into standard business
productivity applications like Lotus 1-2-3. Users of SMI's standalone
software will be able to link to Lotus via a utility SMI will introduce
later this year.

Combining Spreadsheets and Maps Provides Solid Business Advantages

The ability to combine information about location with marketplace data
such as demographics and company sales performance offers a tremendous
advantage to business professionals. Using mapping to analyze and display
spreadsheet information frequently provides new perspectives on
opportunities, issues, trends and relationships. By bringing maps together
with spreadsheets, personal computer users can identify patterns in
corporate databases and allocate resources more precisely and profitably.
