SOFTWARE PUBLISHING UNVEILS HARVARD GRAPHICS 3.0 FOR WINDOWS AT PC EXPO

Introduces Innovations that Help Users Create More Effective Presentations

NEW YORK, June 27, 1994 -- Software Publishing Corporation today announced
Harvard Graphics 3.0 for Windows, a major new release of its flagship
presentation graphics software. Harvard Graphics 3.0 builds on the ease of
use inherent in previous versions, and introduces significant innovations
that focus on helping users create and deliver more effective visuals.
Version 3.0 will be unveiled tonight at the Intergalactic User Group
Officers Conference in New York, and will be shown at Software
Publishing's Booth # 3170 throughout the PC EXPO show.

"Each new feature and enhancement in this release addresses what users told
us they want most in a presentation graphics product: the ability to
create and deliver the best-looking presentations quickly and easily, "
said Irfan Salim, president and chief executive officer of Software
Publishing Corporation. "With Harvard Graphics 3.0, Software Publishing
continues to introduce innovations to the industry that enable users to
communicate business information more effectively."

New Research Reveals What's Most Important to Users

When developing Harvard Graphics 3.0, Software Publishing commissioned an
indepth independent presentation graphics user study, conducted by Systems
Research Corp. Responses were gathered from 620 Harvard Graphics,
Freelance and PowerPoint users, as well as from people who create
presentations using other products, such as spreadsheets, word processors
and drawing packages. While "ease of use" and "getting the job done
quickly" were cited as critical, the study found that it's the final
results that are most important. In sum, users want to produce an
effective, visually-appealing presentation that will have a lasting
impression on their audience.

With this user research and ongoing customer feedback, Software Publishing
focused on developing capabilities that help people create and deliver
more visually effective presentations. In addition, Software Publishing
continued to build on its foundation of ease of use and learning. Harvard
Graphics 3.0 also offers more shortcuts, visual feedback and guidance to
help increase users' overall efficiency in completing a task.

"Harvard Graphics 3.0 truly reflects what the end user wants in a graphics
package," said Terry Brewster of AT & T. "I've been using Harvard Graphics
for years, and this version has a lot of the functionality I've been
waiting for."

Innovations Focus on Helping Users Create More Effective Visuals

Harvard Graphics 3.0 is the only presentation graphics product that offers
on-line design assistance and other features that focus on helping users
create and deliver more professional-looking presentations. In Version
3.0, Software Publishing expanded its Harvard Graphics Advisor feature and
now offers users a complete Advisor System which includes Quick
Presentations, Quick Advice, an interactive Design Checker, Quick Tips and
Design Tips, and the Advisor hotline and newsletter.

To help users get started quickly, Version 3.0 offers Quick Presentations,
or predesigned presentations with common business themes, such as annual
report, brainstorming session, or marketing plan. Each Quick Presentation
provides real-life examples, backgrounds, chart styles, and tips for how
to use charts more effectively. Users can customize a Quick Presentation
with their own relevant data, titles, and descriptions, and permanently
add it to their presentation library.

"When pulling an entire presentation together, it's often hard to know
where to start," said Karen Markham, financial systems specialist at LEGO
Systems, Inc. "Quick Presentations offer useful guidance, examples and
ideas, giving me a 'jump start' on my presentation."

As users proceed with their presentation, Harvard Graphics 3.0 offers Quick
Advice, which enables them to quickly obtain advice regarding the
selection and most effective use of presentation styles, output devices,
and chart types. For example, by clicking the Quick Advice button, users
can find out which presentation style works best for a specific output
medium, or which chart type will most effectively communicate their
information.

After creating a presentation, users can check the appearance of their
slides with the Advisor Design Checker, a significant innovation not found
in any other presentation graphics package. Users simply select the Check
Design option in the Advisor panel, and the product provides feedback on a
single slide or the entire presentation. For example, the Design Checker
will notify the user if a pie chart has too many slices, or if text needs
more contrast from a slide background.

In addition, Version 3.0 now allows users to access Advisor Design Tips and
Quick Tips in all views throughout the product. Design Tips give users
suggestions on how to improve the appearance of their chart, and Quick
Tips offer short-cuts for editing text and graphs. The Advisor panel can
be found in the Slide Editor, Outliner, and Slide Sorter views, as well as
the Master Template, Backgrounds and Slide Templates.

Further enhancements that focus on helping users create more effective
visuals include a new Animation Player and 15 ready-made Animation CLIPS.
Harvard F/X now offers autrotrace, allowing users to transform existing
black and white or color bitmapped images to high quality, smooth vector
images. Harvard F/X is the OLE server applet in Harvard Graphics that
enables users to create special text and graphic effects to add impact to
their presentations.

Ease of Use and Learning: The Foundation of Harvard Graphics 3.0

Version 3.0 continues to build on the award-winning usability found in
previous versions, offering users quicker ramp-up time and a greater level
of ease of use. For example, Version 3.0 incorporates more visual
feedback, previews and guidance throughout the product.

To make the process of creating and editing charts more intuitive, Software
Publishing expanded the use of Quick Looks throughout the product. Quick
Looks are interactive chart miniatures that let users see how they will
affect a chart before they apply any changes.

Version 3.0 also gives users instant descriptions of icons with Quick
Labels. When users pass the mouse over an icon, a small yellow box appears
with the icon's function. Quick Labels are found on the Icon Bar,
Attributes Bar, and Tool Bar.

Other new features that offer greater visual feedback include the
Transition Effects Preview, which lets users preview any animated effect
before applying it to a slide, eliminating the confusion of what it does
and how it will look. Harvard Graphics 3.0 also automatically runs through
the slide previews for the entire presentation, letting users quickly
review the flow of a series of slides.

In addition, the 5-Minute Coach has been revised to help users learn and
relearn the product more quickly and easily. The product's interactive
tutorial now offers five different topics, including an overview of the
product, creating text charts, creating data charts, customizing a
presentation, and delivering a presentation.

Efficiency: Helping Users Get the Job Done Quickly

Since most presentations are created at the last minute, users have
indicated that they want greater efficiency throughout the presentation
creation process. Harvard Graphics 3.0 addresses this area by providing
enhancements that help users accomplish tasks as quickly as possible.

To help users avoid trial and error at print time, Version 3.0 offers Black
and White Preview, a full-screen image of what each slide will look like
in black and white before sending it to the printer.

Version 3.0 also lets users launch applications directly from the
customizable icon bar, giving them quick and easy access to applications
on their desktop. Users can now add any DOS or Windows application program
icon to any of the customizable icon bars. For example, a user can add an
icon for a spreadsheet application, that in turn can automatically load a
specific file.

Usability testing found that many users prefer to do their editing directly
in the Slide Editor, rather than through the intermediate step of the Data
Form. In Version 3.0, users now have the option of bypassing the Data Form
and working directly on their slide.

Version 3.0 is also e-mail enabled, allowing users to quickly e-mail a
presentation without exiting Harvard Graphics. The product supports both
VIM and MAPI protocols.

Further enhancements include the Attributes Bar, which lets users make fast
changes to text, graphics and elements. Version 3.0 also offers improved
navigation tools, including VCR-like button controls at the bottom of each
screen that take the user to the first slide of a presentation, the
previous slide, the next slide, or the last slide.
