SPSS 6.1 for Windows Mare Than 3 Times Faster with New 32-bit Architecture;
Enhanced Ease of Use, More Statistics Also Featured

CHICAGO -- June 13, 1994 -- Analysis procedures run more than three times
faster in the new version of the SPSS for Windows statistical package that
SPSS Inc. (NASDAQ: SPSS), the leading supplier of statistical software for
Microsoft Windows, announced it will start shipping later this month.

SPSS 6.1 for Windows, the third release of the company's award-winning
Windows product, is one of the first packages using Microsoft's Win32s
technology, enabling users to run SPSS for Windows much faster on the
computers they already use. In addition, the company said SPSS 6.1 for
Windows has significantly improved ease of use with a new toolbar,
expanded help and several new graphic file formats, and has added more
statistical features including case identification of individual points in
scatterplots and boxplots, display of censored cases in Kaplan-Meier
plots, one-sample t-tests and a new GLM-based loglinear procedure for more
robust modeling.

Shipping with SPSS 6.1 for Windows is the Win32s system from Microsoft so
users do not have to buy additional hardware or software. Win32s takes
advantage of a computer's faster processing speed without any system
changes or upgrades.

This third release of SPSS' Windows software puts SPSS a full two releases
ahead of its competitors. Since its introduction in June 1992, SPSS for
Windows has been the most successful product in the company's history with
Windows users now making up 30 per cent of the company's customer base.

SPSS is used in a variety of applications including survey research,
marketing and sales analysis, quality improvement and general research.
Nearly a quarter of SPSS for Windows customers have come from the ranks of
spreadsheet users looking to do more with their data than simple summary
statistics and row-and-column math.

SPSS 6.1 for Windows upgrade pricing in the United States and Canada is
$199 for the Base and $39-69 for options. The purchase price is $695 for
the Base system with options ranging $395-$495. Bundle pricing (SPSS Base
plus optional modules) is available offering users significant savings.
Academic and GSA schedule pricing, network, perpetual and other licenses
are also available.

"SPSS 6.1 for Windows delivers more 'Real Stats. Real Easy,' and now real
fast," said Jack Noonan, president and CEO. "With faster performance,
enhanced usability and more statistics, we are giving users more of what
they want. And, we're doing it with the latest technology, Win32s, so
users can have the advantage of a more powerful computing environment at
no additional costs. We were the first major stats package on Windows, and
the first with DDE & OLE 1.0, OLE 2.0, ODBC 2.0, and now we are first with
a 32 bit architecture. And we are one of just a few products supporting
Win32s."

Performance more than three times better; first stats package with Win32s

SPSS 6.1 for Windows is the first statistical Windows application that runs
on a 32 bit architecture. The 32 bit architecture uses Win32s technology
from Microsoft which makes it run faster than it did when it only used 16
bits. In preliminary testing of SPSS 6.1 for Windows, improvements were
recorded on many procedures throughout the system. For example, processing
time for chart drawing was 1.5 times as fast, correlations and examine
were over three times as fast, ANOVA and descriptives were nearly twice as
fast and regression was three times as fast.

Enhancements to the new product include a new application toolbar for
instant access to more frequently used functions, task-oriented help that
explains how to perform an analysis with step-by-step instructions for
common tasks, from "how to enter data" to "how to decide which statistic
to use" and several new graphic file formats, such as WMF, CGM, TIFF,
PICT, EPS and BMP, which make it easy for users to move a graph from SPSS
into another graphics package for further editing or inclusion in a
presentation.

Also new to this release is variable information access for accessing data
without interrupting analysis, automatic workspace allocation that
right-sizes SPSS to your computer and a set of chart galleries that
suggest the charts that are appropriate given a particular data set.

Users also will receive a free tutorial that offers an overview of the data
analysis process and teaches the basic operation of SPSS for Windows.

More statistical enhancements are available in SPSS 6.1 for Windows,
including:

* Case ID in scatterplots and boxplots, allowing users to toggle between
their graphs and the underlying data to identify individual cases.

* GLM-based loglinear, favored by direct marketers and other model builders
using categorical data for such tasks as exploring consumer demographics
or profiling market segments.

* Censored cases in Kaplan-Meier survival plots, a new capability
particularly helpful for health care researchers, and social scientists
studying populations.

* One-sample t-tests, allows users to identify meaningful differences
between groups.

SPSS 6.1 requirements are:

* IBM compatible PC, 386 or better
* 4 megabytes of RAM (8 megabytes of RAM recommended)
* PC- or MS-DOS 3.1, Windows 3.1
* 30MB of hard disk space for Base system only
(includes 10MB for swap file required by Win32s)
* Math co-processor
* Mouse (required for editing graphics)
* VGA monitor with Hercules video card
