STAR GATE EXPANDS SERIAL I/O OFFERINGS FOR REMOTE ACCESS

June 1994 -- SOLON, OH--Supporting from one to 64 dial-up LAN access
connections, a broadened product mix from Star Gate Technologies, Inc.
easily accommodates high-speed modems on both ends of a remote access
connection, announced Robert K. Searson, director of marketing.

On the remote user side, Star Gate recommends its new TurboPort Family of
client accelerators. Designed to support the latest and fastest modem
standards, these one- and two-port serial I/O controllers, according to
Searson, also are easy to install and use.

On the server side, Star Gate's Avanstar line of eight- and 16-port I/O
controllers support concurrent dial-up connections (up to 64 per PC) and
offer hassle-free administration and unmatched installation flexibility,
Searson said.

Avanstar I/O controllers are offered with several connection choices for
remote access-standard EIA-232 connection panels with DB-25 connectors or
Multi-Modem Panels. The eight- and 16-port standard panels are used to
connect external modems--one modem per port--to a network.

The Multi-Modem panel supplies eight full-featured, built-in V.32bis modems
(fax--V.17; data compression--V.42bis) for data and fax transmissions. By
providing eight 14.4Kbps modems on one platform, Searson said, the
Multi-Modem panel simplifies cabling and set up.

"Star Gate's assortment of serial I/O controllers and connection panels is
designed to easily support a multitude of dial-up LAN access connections
under a broad spectrum of network environments-including Windows NT,
Novell, UNIX and OS/2," Searson said. "Add IBM LAN Distance software, and
Star Gate's I/O hardware offers optimum remote access to even more network
environments."

Star Gate bundles IBM's LAN Distance Connection Server Software with Star
Gate's Avanstar 200 series controllers (including choice of connection
panel: standard EIA-232 connection panels or the 14.4Kbps Multi-Modem
panels.) Offered in eight- to 64-port configurations, these
hardware/software bundles also require no dedicated network server.

According to Searson, LAN Distance software supports most major network
environments including IBM LAN Server, Novell NetWare, Microsoft LAN
Manager, Banyan Vines and Artisoft LANtastic.
He said IBM's LAN Distance solution supplies both remote node and casual
bridging capabilities along with the industry's most extensive security
features--including a three-level access privilege scheme, standards-based
encryption and message authentication, and highly configurable logon
parameters.

TurboPort I/O Controllers Accelerate Remote Client Connections

Designed to maximize modem speeds for remote users using PC, XT, AT, ISA or
Micro Channel systems, Star Gate's one- and two-port TurboPort controllers
support baud rates up to 921.6Kbps.

Searson said these high-speed controllers also may be used on the network
side for installations supporting small numbers of remote users.

Built to easily handle the fastest modems, the software-configurable
TurboPort controllers offer automatic flow control and two 1024-byte
buffers to prevent data loss. Backward compatible with standard 16450 and
16550 UARTs, TurboPort controllers easily install into 8- or 16-bit
expansion slots of PCs, XTs, ATs and Micro Channel or compatible systems
and are recommended for Windows and LAN environments--including Novell
NetWare.

Available now, the one-port ISA controller retails for $99 and the two-port
ISA controller retails for $149. The two-port Micro Channel controller
retails for $199.

Avanstar Controllers -- the Power Behind Star Gate's LAN Server
Connections

Avanstar 100 and 200 series I/O controllers deliver the highest speeds
available for PC servers supporting dial-up connections from remote users.
According to Searson, these high performance controllers maximize data
handling by incorporating the best in serial technology with innovations
such as:

* 20MHz RISC-based communications chips (CD1400s)
* Powerful on-board processing
* FIFO memory buffers
* Transient surge suppression on all signals

Functioning like network boards, the Avanstar 200 controllers also more
efficiently handle data flow by packetizing the data--especially critical
for high-speed modems handling incoming calls from remote users. Avanstar
8- and 16-port controllers for ISA, EISA and Micro Channel systems range
in price from $1,295 to $2,055.

Avanstar Multi-Modem Panel Simplifies Cabling and Set-up

Compatible with all Avanstar 100 and 200 series controllers for ISA, EISA
and Micro Channel systems, the Avanstar Multi-Modem panel provides eight
V.32bis fax/modems (including V.17 fax functions and V.42bis modem
compression) in a single connection platform. An Avanstar 200 controller
with Multi-Modem panel retails for $4,075. This full-featured panel also:

* Eliminates the need for stand-alone modem setups
* Supports both fax and data functions--each modem is fully
integrated and operates independently of the other on-board
  modems
* Supports data throughput up to 14.4Kbps (V.32bis) and
  57.6Kbps using V.42bis modem compression
* Accommodates multiple board setups--a typical PC will support
up to four Multi-Modem panels, providing up to 32 modem ports
