graphics-related technologies, announces Vista-S6, a high-speed, 1200 dpi
24-bit flatbed color scanner delivering professional quality images at an
unprecedented low price. This multifunction scanner is aimed at users who
would like to take full advantage of the plumetting costs in systems and
software tools for document management and desktop publishing. The
Vista-S6 features fast scanning speed and accurate image quality with a
50+ page document feeder, making Vista-S6 an ideal document management
tool for offices where scanning and archiving large amounts of data is
part of the daily business routine. In addition, high-performance features
such as MagicMatch color calibration, descreening capabilities, and
automatic scan functions, make the S6 an attractive solution for users
working in desktop publishing.

Document Management

The Vista-S6, a single pass scanner, is UMAX's solution for users working
in document management, delivering high-speed and high-quality lineart
scans. A SCSI-II interface, micro stepping motors, and 256K bus caching
buffers to provide unprecedented speed. The Vista-S6 is able to scan a
full 8.5" x 11" image in 7 seconds for gray scale, and 21 seconds for
color images at 200 dpi. The Vista-S6 will also have the ability to scan
multiple documents at high speeds with the addition of an optional
document feeder, the ADF-V6. The ADF-V6 will clip onto the top of the
scanner and have a 50+ page capacity.

Graphics and Desktop Publishing

For users working within the desktop publishing environment, Vista-S6
combines high speed with features that deliver professional image quality.
Vista-S6 has an optical resolution of 600 x 300 dpi and a maximum
resolution of 1200 x 1200 dpi with UltraView software interpolation,
providing sharper results when scanning even very small objects. A
trilinear CCD with cold cathode lamp, and separate analog to digital
design, provides superior image color quality for vivid colors.

The Vista-S6 includes descreening functions to remove moire patterns that
appear from non-photographic, printed materials. In addition, UMAX's
unique built-in color management system, MagicMatch, provides color
calibration functions to ensure better color accuracy. VistaS6 also
provides an optional UMAX transparency adapter (UTA) for users working in
desktop publishing who desire high-speed color scanning with both
reflective or transparency capabilities.

Ease-Of-Use

The Vista-S6 design is easy to use, maintenance-free and highly expandable.
The scanner's performance is insured in part by a cold cathode lamp which
has a long life cycle providing users with the advantage of easy
maintenance. An ASIC design limits component count and adds reliability,
thus reducing overall cost.

A powerful but easy-to-use interface allows novice users to operate the
scanner effectively. VistaScan drivers for the Vista-S6 provide maximum
productivity and high-performance scanning for all levels of users.
User-friendly features include an auto-adjustment feature that helps the
user obtain the best quality scan. In addition, image processing takes
place during a scan, not after. As a result it is easier to work on an
image before it becomes a file size too large to manipulate. Other
functions for simplified use allow the users to convert a scanned negative
to positive during scanning and define the aspect ratio and size of the
final image by setting the output width, length, and sampling ratio for
the scanner to adjust the input resolution automatically.

Vista-S6's suggested retail price is $945 and will be available for both
Windows and Macintosh users. It comes bundled with Adobe Photoshop LE,
image editing software, Omni Page Direct OCR software, and MagicMatch,
UMAX's color matching software. In addition, VistaScan software provides
TWAIN compliance for Windows and PlugInScan compatibility for Macintosh.
This product is scheduled to ship in late June, 1994. The Vista-S6 Pro, an
enhanced scanner package featuring a full version of Photoshop and Kai's
Power Tools, will also be available for a list price of $ 1045. An
automatic document feeder with 50+ sheet capacity is also available and
scheduled to ship in September, 1994 for $ 495. UMAX's transparency
adapter (UTA) will be available for the Vista-S6 in June for $595.
