Visioneer Launches Alliance Program for ISVs, Corporate Developers

Members Receive Development Kit for Paper-Enabling Applications

NEW YORK -- June 28, 1994 -- Visioneer, the pioneer and leader of the
document communications industry, today unveiled the Visioneer Alliance
Program for independent software vendors (ISVs) and corporate application
developers who want to paper-enable their desktop and custom applications.
Twenty-three charter members of the new Visioneer Alliance Program were
also announced today, including Oracle Corp., Intel Corp., Caere Corp.,
Banyan Systems Inc., Traveling Software Inc., CompuServe Inc. and Xerox
Imaging Systems.

Under the Visioneer Alliance Program, members receive the MaxMate Links
Software Development Kit, priority technical assistance. product
discounts, future technology briefings. and are also eligible to
participate in beta test and co-marketing programs.

Visioneer's PaperMax personal scanner and MaxMate document communications
software provide a revolutionary and unique method of easily and quickly
inputting paper into a computer, organizing and combining it with
electronically-created information, and then sharing it with others using
electronic mail and electronic fax.

"PaperMax and MaxMate offer the only integrated solution to the problem of
how to get paper-based information into the computer and then share that
information with others," said Shelley Harrison, Visioneer vice president
of marketing. "Now the task at hand is paper-enabling applications -- that
is, making paper a natural element of applications such as database and
document management, so that paper becomes just another data type.'?

The Maxmate Links Software Development Kit enables corporate developers and
ISVs to create special links between MaxMate and their applications. The
result is that users of paper-enabled applications can drag and drop
documents onto link icons. The paper is then automatically attached,
referenced or embedded in the application's format, depending on the
preferences of the link developer.

Paper-Enabled Applications.

Even with the increased use of computers, most business processes still
require the handling and storage of paper documents. For example, many
organizations commonly file and track customer invoices and other
paper-based correspondence outside of their customer database application.
While scanning technologies have existed for some time, the high
deployment costs and training requirements have discouraged their
widespread adoption. With the introduction of PaperMax and MaxMate in
January of this year, Visioneer permanently changed the economics of
adopting scanning technology.

PaperMax scanners feature Visioneer's exclusive paper-driven technology. To
start a scan the user inserts a piece of paper into PaperMax. The scan
automatically launches the MaxMate software, which comes with links to
popular e-mail, electronic fax and OCR applications.

Now, with the MaxMate Links Software Developer's Kit, ISVs and corporate
developers can enable their applications to handle paper-based information
just as easily. For example, the user of a paper-enabled application could
attach scanned invoices to a customer database record. Other possible uses
could include integration with document management systems so that paper
and electronic information can reside together, or accounting programs to
allow users to attach invoices to entries in a general ledger.

"The paper-shuffling days are over for us," said Peter Bowman, lead
software engineer for Lynchburg, VA-based BW Nuclear Technologies, a beta
site for the MaxMate Links Software Development Kit. "We've paper-enabled
our expense reporting system. We're using PaperMax and MaxMate to scan in
all of our monthly receipts, which are automatically attached to expense
statements in our Sybase database. So now, when I view an expense
statement I can click on a button and it shows me all of the corresponding
receipts."

Added Larry Lunnetta, vice president of Caere Corp.: "Paper-enabling
PageKeeper, our document management application, means our users can now
store and retrieve paper documents with electronic information already in
our system. The time has come to throw away your filing cabinet."
