"Essential" New Book Covers All Aspects of Client/Server Computing

NEW YORK, NY, June 28, 1994 -- In the same witty, readable style that made
their earlier books best-sellers, Robert Orfali and Dan Harkey have teamed
up with Jeri Edwards to write yet another ground-breaking reference:
Essential Client/Server Survival Guide, the most comprehensive and
complete look at client/server technology available anywhere.

Faced with a new age of computing where client/server reigns, many computer
users find themselves lost in a "jungle" of unfamiliar and often complex
technologies. Essential Client/Server Survival Guide cuts through the hype
by providing an integrated view of client/server with comprehensive
coverage of key aspects such as network operating systems, database
management systems, distributed systems management, federated databases,
Groupware, TP Monitors, distributed objects and more. By exposing the
realities of client/server, this book enables readers to understand the
complexities of the technology and discover just how it can fit into their
computer system.

The book begins by outlining a typical client/server model, and then offers
a big-picture overview of the most important client/server technologies.
It goes on to cover all the standards in the field including CORBA, OSF,
X/Open, OSI, Internet, DCE and SQL.

Acknowledging at the outset that "there are no neutral observers in today's
marketplace," the authors offer personal opinions on many of the subjects
covered throughout the book, via sidebars that they've conspicuously
labeled "soapboxes." In the main text of the book, however, they discuss
both the pros and cons of each topic covered, being careful to separate
the facts from their opinions. Illustrations, cartoons and amusing quotes
are used throughout the book to separate theory from reality and make even
the most complex subjects easy to understand and enjoyable to read about.

For anyone involved in client/server computing, Essential Client/Server
Survival Guide is, as its title suggests, essential. Computer users of all
levels - from end-users, IS managers, computer sales reps, business
professionals and end-users to systems analysts, engineers and programmers
- will appreciate the book's highly readable and entertaining style. For
those new to the technology, it's an easy and fun way to update one's
skills and become literate in client/server.

About the Authors:

Robert Orfali and Dan Harkey of San Jose, California work together at IBM
on distributed objects and client/server tools. Together they have more
than 35 years of experience in designing and implementing software
projects and client/server systems. Orfali and Harkey are the authors of
the best-selling Client/Server Programming with OS/2 (VNR 1993), an OS/2
Monthly "Book of the Year" award winner currently in its third edition,
and the new Client/Server Survival Guide with OS/2 (VNR 1994). Jeri
Edwards is Director of Transaction Processing and Client/Server Software
Development at Tandem Computers Incorporated in Cupertino, California.

Since its founding in 1848, Van Nostrand Reinhold (VNR) has pioneered the
publication of high-quality engineering, technical and scientific
reference books. VNR's computer book group, founded in 1978, publishes an
extensive list of timely, high-level technical books for computer
professionals and business executives in any industry. The books are
written by industry authorities in each subject area and are often
published in cooperation with leading hardware and software vendors. All
VNR titles can be purchased through major book chains, independent
bookstores, book distributors and college bookstores.
