Welch Allyn Begins Shipment of "PDF Capable" Products;

Symbol Technologies Announces Standards Compliance

June 28, 1994 -- Skaneateles Falls, NY-- Welch Allyn Data Collection
Division is exhibiting its CCD based "PDF Capable" readers. The new PDF
Capable products, first announced in January at the NRF show, provide a
cost effective, high quality solution for reading and decoding PDF417
labels. Early Market reception of the Welch Allyn PDF Capable readers has
been exceptional, with users citing the product's integrated decoding,
reliability and overall price performance as key features. Hand held and
fixed mount versions of the PDF Capable CCD products are available
immediately from Welch Allyn.

PDF417 is the breakthrough high capacity, high density bar code symbology
developed by Symbol Technologies for advanced data capture solutions. The
exciting new symbology offers increased data storage (up to 1.1 kilobytes
of data), built in error correction (up to 50% of the label can be
damaged), and variable aspect ratios (for printing flexibility) . The
portable data file technology can be used for a variety of new
applications in industrial, commercial, retail and government applications
and represents an emerging industry standard for high capacity, 2
dimensional bar codes solutions.

Coincident with Welch Allyn's general market release, Symbol Technologies
has released a policy paper to the Auto ID community underscoring Symbol's
intent to foster the adoption and use of the PD417 symbology as an open
standard. Symbol has announced complete compliance with both the ANSI and
AIM requirements for public domain status of the new symbology. Consistent
with the ANSI patent policy, Symbol has agreed that a license will be made
available without compensation to applicants desiring to utilize the
license for implementing the standard. For AIM compliance, Symbol has
committed that PDF417 symbology is entirely within the public domain and
free from any use restrictions, licenses, and fees.

Welch Allyn welcomes Symbol's commitment to placing PDF417 entirely within
the public domain and is working with Symbol to promote the adoption and
use of PDF417 on a broad market basis.
