Apple France Bundles Mathematica with Power Macintosh

May 20, 1994 -- Champaign, Illinois -- Wolfram Research, Inc. is now
shipping an optimized version of Mathematica 2.2, the leading software for
technical computation, for Power Macintosh computers. Mathematica
represents the only native port in the technical software category
currently available for Power Macintosh.

Tests at Wolfram Research indicate that this native port of Mathematica is
remarkably faster on a Power Macintosh than on a 680X0-based Macintosh
computers. Numerical calculations, for example, run approximately eight to
ten times faster, graphics are rendered between four and five times
faster, and symbolic operations run between three and six times faster.

"Mathematica on a Power Macintosh is the best combination for engineers,
researchers, educators, financial analysts and students," explains Thomas
Chin, manager of Macintosh technical development, Wolfram Research. "It
has the speed of a workstation and the ease-of-use of a Macintosh."

Bundled in France

Apple France was so impressed by the speed and functionality of Mathematica
on the Power Macintosh that they have decided to bundle Mathematica with
Power Macintosh computers sold within the French academic community.

"Mathematica has a solid reputation among teachers and students worldwide."
explained Prem Chawla, chief operating officer, Wolfram Research. "The
bundle of Mathematica with Power Macintosh computers is proving to be an
irresistible value for higher education customers in France."

At present, about 40 percent of the registered Mathematica users are in the
academic community. Mathematica has been extremely well-received in
education not only because of its computational power and ease-of-use, but
also because of its user interface which allows users to create
interactive documents called Mathematica notebooks. Users can combine live
mathematical formulas, plots, animated graphics, and text in these
notebooks. Teachers and students around the world are adopting Mathematica
notebooks as their primary medium for teaching and learning.

Price and Availability

A standard version and an enhanced version of Mathematica is available for
Macintosh computers. The standard version runs on all 680X0-based
computers, but does not take advantage of a numeric coprocessor. It is
priced at $595. The enhanced version contains software for both the Power
Macintosh and other Macintosh computers based on 68020 or higher CPUs. It
uses a smart installer to automatically install Mathematica on the
appropriate machine. The enhanced version will take advantage of a numeric
coprocessor whenever present. The list price of the enhanced version of
Mathematica for the Macintosh is $995. Current Mathematica users who want
to upgrade to the optimized, faster version of Mathematica for their Power
Macintosh computer can do so for $135.
