Zenith Data Systems announces high-speed wireless LAN products

ISA bus, Access Point and PCMCIA cards offer the ultimate in mobile LAN
connectivity

NEW YORK CITY--June 28, 1994--Zenith Data Systems announced today three
major products from its Mobile Systems Group: CruiseLAN/PCMCIA, a
wireless, high-throughput PCMCIA LAN connectivity card; CruiseLAN/ISA, a
PC-based wireless LAN adapter; and CruiseLAN/Access Point, a wireless
bridge for adding nearly unlimited roaming capabilities for wireless
network users. Together, the products provide mobile notebook and
subnotebook users with the ability to connect to LANs with wired-LAN
performance.

"Wireless LAN connectivity gives users the ultimate in mobile computing
capabilities," said David O'Connor, Executive Vice President of ZDS'
Worldwide Product Group. "The CruiseLAN products don't sacrifice
performance for mobility-- that was a primary focus of our development.
Mobile professionals no longer need to make compromises."

With a CruiseLAN/ISA card or Cruise/LAN Access Point installed on the
network, the CruiseLAN/PCMCIA card can provide wireless connection to the
LAN at 1.6 Mbps, which meets the performance requirements of most LAN
applications. "The key to effective mobile computing is range, security
and throughput," said Alan Soucy, Vice President of ZDS' Mobile Systems
Group. "Mobile professionals and mobile applications demand the same
considerations as standard PC LAN computing. These wireless LAN products
give the user direct-connect performance in client-server and peer-to-peer
networks."

CruiseLAN Technology

The high-speed wireless, spread-spectrum technology used in the CruiseLAN
products is the fastest, most secure method for incorporating mobile
computing into current LANs. Wireless technology allows true mobility in
such situations as bedside computing in hospitals, order entry and
inventory in warehouses, on-site teaching and learning outside of the
normal classroom. In addition, these wireless LAN products make LAN
connectivity economical and easy to implement in environments where
running wires is prohibitively expensive or confining. CruiseLAN products
extend the benefits of LAN connectivity to workgroups which require
extremely quick setup, to workers in older buildings or to people whose
work location moves often.

Some features of the CruiseLAN technology:

* 2.4-2.4835 Ghz frequency
* 1.6 Megabits per second data rate
* Up to 1000 foot cell coverage
* Frequency hopping spread spectrum
* Error detection and correction
* Secure digital communications with hardware scrambling
  and software encryption

CruiseLAN/PCMCIA

The CruiseLAN PCMCIA is a Type II card with a range up to 500 feet in
typical office environments and up to 1000 feet range in open spaces. The
card ships with ODI drivers for Novell NetWare 2.x, 3.x,. 4.x and Personal
NetWare; NDIS drivers for Microsoft Windows for Workgroups, LAN Manager
and Artisoft LANtastic. Notebooks and other PCMCIA Type II compliant
devices can be configured as nodes on any of these networks.

CruiseLAN/ISA

The ISA-bus CruiseLAN/ISA card is a 16-bit adapter card for desktop PCs or
servers. The spread-spectrum, frequency-hopping technology of the
CruiseLAN/ISA makes wireless LAN capacity transparently secure, with both
hardware and software encryption. The 15-channel capabilities allow
multiple LANs to operate within the same physical space.

CruiseLAN/Access Point

The CruiseLAN/Access Point serves as a wireless bridge, allowing wireless
users to move beyond the initial 1000 foot cell provided with the
CruiseLAN add in cards. Bridges can be installed throughout an
installation to insure continual coverage, making mobile roaming a
transparent, fully connected activity. Because every CruiseLAN/Access
Point provides an additional 1.6 Mbps of communications bandwidth, the
total wireless communication capability of a given location can be
increased by installing additional Access Points.

Standards-based Technology

In keeping with Zenith Data Systems' commitment to preserving customers'
investments, the CruiseLAN/PCMCIA and CruiseLAN/ISA products conform to
the recently proposed IEEE 802.11 Standards Committee for dual mode high-
and low-speed wireless LAN environments. The 802.11 Committee will
complete a Draft Standard document by late 1994.

Co-developed with Industry Leader

The CruiseLAN product line is a result of a close working relationship
between ZDS and Proxim, Inc., a leader in wireless LAN connectivity.
"Proxim's commitment to superior wireless technology combined with ZDS'
portable heritage, miniaturization and power management expertise, has
provided a strong foundation for a long term Mobile Systems partnership,"
said Alan Soucy.

Pricing and Availability

The CruiseLAN/ISA and CruiseLAN/PCMCIA will be widely available from all
Zenith Data Systems distributors, resellers and field sales account
managers by the end of July. Price from ZDS for the CruiseLAN/PCMCIA is
$695; CruiseLAN/ISA is $595; and CruiseLAN/Access Point is $1895.
Resellers determine their own pricing, which may be higher or lower than
ZDS' price. CruiseLAN products have tested with ZDS' broad line of
products including Z-STAR, and Z-LITE notebooks, Z-SELECT and Z-STATION
500 desktop systems, and the Z-SERVER family of servers. In addition, the
CruiseLAN products have been tested with a number of third-party
computers.
