DIGITAL INK CHOOSES ZIFF-DAVIS FOR DELIVERY OF THE WASHINGTON POST ONLINE
SERVICE

WASHINGTON -- Digital Ink Co., the electronic publishing subsidiary of The
Washington Post Company, today announced that it will use a new computer
online technology from Ziff-Davis Interactive to deliver a news and
information service.
The Post online service will go beyond the traditional print newspaper,
providing additional news and information -- in areas such as business,
sports, education and entertainment -- calendars, games, contests,
conversation groups and other interactive activities. It will be a
one-stop venue for Washington-area residents to turn to for online news
and information.

"In designing this service, we wanted to create an electronic community in
which all Washingtonians can obtain the latest news and information in
interactive and innovative ways," said Donald K. Brazeal, editor and
publisher of Digital Ink. "We chose Ziff-Davis' Interchange system because
it allows us to create our own unique look and feel, because it lets us
maintain a direct relationship with Washington Post readers and because it
is a technological leap forward for online services. By applying our
journalistic skills and values to this service, we hope to enrich the
experience of living in the Washington area."

The service will use many of the same design features as the traditional
print product -- including Washington Post logos, headlines and graphics
-- while also fully capitalizing on the capabilities of the personal
computer. For an additional fee, users of The Post's service will also
have access to The Interchange Online Network, Ziff-Davis' new online
information service for professionals and others with a serious interest
in computing. The Computing section of Interchange will include libraries
of downloadable software, online companions to popular Ziff print
publications and unique Interchange content such as product reviews
overview grids, tech clinics, consumer advisories and special interest
support groups.

"We are thrilled that Digital Ink has recognized the value and implications
of using Interchange to build and deliver rich editorial products that
serve new needs in the marketplace," said Michael E. Kolowich, president
of Ziff-Davis Interactive. "We are confident that Interchange will make
online services like The Post more accessible and valuable than ever
before."

According to Brazeal, the online service is being designed as a companion
to the daily newspaper, capitalizing on the greater opportunities for
interaction, customization and content depth possible only in the
electronic world. In addition to the stories in each day's newspaper. The
Post's online service will deliver information that can't be found
anywhere else and it will allow users access to the information whenever
they want it.

The service will also feature strong communications capabilities, such as
electronic mail and messaging that will allow users to be active
participants in this new online community. Through an array of electronic
public conference areas, users will be able to exchange ideas and comments
with Post writers and editors, newsmakers and each other.

The Post's online service will include detailed neighborhood news, texts of
speeches and press conferences and a comprehensive guide to entertainment
in Washington. The service also will provide electronic access to The
Post's archives for quick retrieval of past articles, as well as a
connection to the Internet global computer network. Included in the plans
for the service are features designed to meet the needs and interests of
families, older readers, sports buffs, investors, government employees,
the military and schools.

Online advertising, both display and classified, will be included in The
Post's online service. The electronic medium offers unique features to
users and advertisers including searchable classified listings and an
opportunity for users to place ads online.

The Post's online service initially will be available for IBM PC or
compatible computers that run Windows 3.1 and have a modem. It will be
available for the Macintosh at a later date.

Pricing for The Post's online service has not been finalized. The Post's
online service will be commercially available in late 1994, but a
large-scale test phase will be in place in mid-1994. Digital Ink will
announce in the next few weeks how its users may participate in the test
phase.
