Adobe Extends Information Portability Beyond the Desktop with Acrobat
Player Technology

Embedded Version of Acrobat Software to Empower New Class of Information
Appliances

Mountain View, Calif., (May 22, 1995) (Nasdaq ADBE)--Enabling ways for
digital information to be shared beyond desktop computers, Adobe Systems
Incorporated introduced today the Acrobat Player program, a completely
portable and device-independent version of Adobe Acrobat software that
redefines cross-platform computing. Acrobat Player will enable third
parties to develop computer-based appliances, such as navigation systems,
projectors and set-top boxes, that can provide access to visually rich
information regardless of the kind of hardware or software that might be
used.

"The increasing distribution of content in digital form through media like
the Internet and CD-ROM has permanently expanded the role of the desktop
computer from a computation and creation device into an appliance for
accessing and using information," said John Warnock, chairman and CEO,
Adobe Systems. "With Acrobat Player, Adobe creates possibilities for new
devices that can be more cost-effective, portable and easier-to-use than
desktop systems while providing the power of Acrobat software to share
information in a universal and rich format."

The Acrobat Player program extends the universal communications
capabilities of Adobe Acrobat software to new kinds of devices based on
computer technology. Acrobat Player can be customized for a broad range of
applications to allow information appliances to access a wide variety of
digital information that has been created by virtually any authoring tool.
By providing independence from hardware and software considerations, the
Acrobat Player program frees developers to create products using the most
appropriate technology without limiting their customers' ability to share
and use rich information.

The Acrobat Player program is designed for embedded systems, specialized
computers used in specific applications such as automobiles, home
appliances, and electromechanical devices, where size, cost and
customization are critical issues. Adobe has been in the embedded systems
business for more than ten years, working with over 60 original equipment
manufacturer (OEM) partners to create printer systems using Adobe
PostScript technology. Adobe and its partners jointly build a new embedded
or host-based printing system almost every working day of the year.

"With Acrobat Player, Adobe brings the experience and expertise gained from
its success with PostScript in building embedded solutions and
establishing de facto standards," continued Warnock. "OEMs building
products based on embedded systems need highly flexible technology to meet
the needs of both their manufacturing specifications and their customers.
With its device independence and fully open architecture, Acrobat Player
will provide a solution for sharing digital information that can be easily
customized for many markets and product types."

Like the family of Acrobat software products, the Acrobat Player program
supports information in Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF), a
resolution independent, universal file format that preserves document
fidelity across computer platforms. PDF files can be created through
Acrobat software from virtually any authoring tool on practically any
computer system. As a result, devices based on Acrobat Player can provide
access to a wide range of digital content without it having to be
re-authored in a proprietary format with specialized tools. Content
providers can easily convert existing documents into PDF, allowing a large
amount of information, including magazines, newspapers, books, maps and
other materials to be immediately available for users of devices based on
Acrobat Player.

The Acrobat Player program uses the same graphics and font rendering
technology as other Acrobat products, faithfully reproducing text and
graphics across different hardware and software environments, and
providing key features such as hypertext linking and support for a full
range of compression algorithms. Like Acrobat software, the Acrobat Player
program has an open architecture, allowing OEMs to extend its
functionality for specific applications. Adobe also provides development
tools, co-development resources and source code that enables OEMs to build
highly customized systems supporting a variety of hardware and software
environments.

The Acrobat Player program is available now to qualified OEMs. The initial
release of Acrobat Player will support content in PDF and will be
available on reference systems based on the Motorola 68EC040 and 68EC060,
and the Intel i960 embedded controllers running a highly customized
version of the JMI C-exec embedded operating system. The next version,
scheduled for an end of summer release, will also support digital video
and audio formats and embedded versions of the PowerPC microprocessor.
