ALTEC LANSING INTRODUCES DESKTOP GRAPHIC-SHARING VIDEO CONFERENCING LINKING
COMPUTERS VIA CONVENTIONAL PHONE LINES.

MILFORD, PA -- Desktop video conferencing links computers through
conventional phone lines for the first time with the AVC1000, an
integrated audio video personal computer multimedia peripheral being
introduced by Altec Lansing Multimedia. A virtual real time desktop video
conferencing l/O system, the AVC1000 includes graphic-sharing
capabilities, digital and still video imaging, high resolution pointing
and annotation, high performance sound reproduction, and a full array of
telephony features. The Altec Lansing AVC1000 has a suggested retail price
of under $800.

FOUR SUBSYSTEMS combine to make the AVC1000 a unique multimedia
communication device. This integrated product includes a video subsystem,
sound subsystem, telephony subsystem and pen tablet subsystem.

HIGH RESOLUTION VIDEO is accomplished through the integration of a CCD
color camera which utilizes advanced 9-bit digital signal processing and
one-third inch 410,000 pixel CCD via a built-in optical lens. The camera
module of the AVC1000 adjusts to a variety of heights and includes full
180-degree tilt capability. CCD specifications include NTSC video
standards, an interline transfer imaging system and a field integration
mode color differential coloring system. The camera is controlled by a DSP
microcontroller which externally interfaces to a host computer via an
RS-232C asynchronous port which controls a variety of operating
parameters, including AGC control, white balance mode, video mute and an
electronic shutter, which can be adjusted between 1/60 through 1/10,000
seconds. The feed-through to the video board is via RCA connectors and an
external four-pin mini-DIN plug.

The result of the AVC1000's advanced high resolution system is superior
video conferencing images.

HIGH QUALITY NEAR-FIELD AUDIO distinguishes the AVC1000. The stereo
near-field audio subsystem achieves high quality sound reproduction with
two midrange speakers, an optional external subwoofer, and a built-in
stereo amplifier with proprietary bass and treble boosts. Dynamic
equalization of the full audio frequency range is accomplished with this
audio subsystem.

Audio is delivered through stereo line inputs and a stereo phone jack or a
built-in-high performance Electret microphone. The AVC1000 also includes
an earphone headset interface. The audio subsystem features an MPC-2 MIDI
input/output through the soundcard MIDI port via a four-pin mini DIN
connector. An automatic switching device allows audio reproduction via the
speakers, speakerphone or from the soundcard.

Audiophile quality sound reproduction can now be added to video
conferences, as the AVC1000 becomes the latest contribution of Altec
Lansing to superior computer audio.

HANDS FREE TELEPHONY makes the AVC1000 additionally versatile because of an
integrated telephone system with a built-in speakerphone. The full-feature
telephone subsystem includes on-hook dialing, memory storage of up to 10
8-digit numbers, cascading memory redial and dialing mode storage,
switchable pulse/tone dialing, one-touch tone switching, flash function
signaling, automatic and/or manual access pause generation, ring volume
control with LED indicator, automatic on and off-hook switching and a half
duplex speakerphone which fully integrates into the stereo audio
amplifier.

HIGH RESOLUTION POINTING AND ANNOTATION is accomplished with the Pen Tablet
subsystem, based on ACECAD Electronductive positioning technology. The
integrated AVC1000 tablet includes a 5-inch square active area with a
resolution rate of up to 2000 lines per inch. The pen structure includes
two switches at the tip and a finger holding ring which is activated by a
5 gram pen-tip switch force. The Pen Tablet subsystem uses an asynchronous
RS-232C interface.

The result of the four AVC1000 subsystems are video conferences, over
conventional phone lines, which accommodate a tremendous variety of audio,
video and visual information, combined in a package with full-feature
telephony.
