Apple Open Transport Ships with the Power Mac 9500

Additional Developers Announce Support

PC EXPO, NEW YORK CITY, NY--June 20, 1995--Apple Computer, Inc. today
announced that Version 1.0 of Apple Open Transport will ship as a
component of the Mac OS on Apple's powerful and expandable new Power
Macintosh 9500. Open Transport, the new Mac OS networking and
communications system, is based on industry standards and will bring a new
level of networking connectivity, control and compatibility to Macintosh
customers, while preserving and enhancing the hallmark of the Mac
OS--built-in support for easy-to-use networking.

The introduction of Open Transport with System 7.5.2 on the new PCI based
Power Mac 9500 underscores Apple's commitment to provide fit-in
compatibility with industry standards for both networking software--Open
Transport Data Link Provider Interface (DLPI) and networking hardware--PCI
bus. Since the Open Transport software is written to take advantage of the
PowerPC processor in Apple's Power Macintosh computers, it provides the
foundation for new levels of performance for networking applications that
support the new Open Transport programming interfaces and are accelerated
for Power Macintosh.

Version 1.0 of Open Transport offers backward compatibility with existing
networking client applications and significantly upgrades the feature set
and performance of TCP/IP on the Mac OS. With the overwhelming acceptance
of TCP/IP protocols in the marketplace, and the tremendous excitement and
visibility of the Internet, Apple has elected to bring a workstation-class
implementation of TCP/IP protocols to the MacOS. Support such as Dynamic
Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), for centralized IP address management;
IP multicast, for participation as an MBone client; and simultaneous TCP
connections limited only by installed memory and processor power, for
increased functionality as an Internet or other TCP/IP network server are
just a few of the new features. The architecture that supports Open
Transport/TCP is itself based on a direct port of the Unix System V R4
STREAMs environment--a proven, robust and scaleable OS networking
technology.

Apple plans to make Open Transport available for other Macintosh computers,
including the installed base of 680x0-based and earlier Power Macintosh
systems later this year. This next release, planned as Open Transport
Version 1.1, is expected to include support for Point-to-Point Protocol
(PPP), AppleTalk and TCP/IP remote networking and will offer tuning to
optimize performance of high speed data links. Apple plans to ship Version
1.1 of Open Transport to customers by the end of 1995 through retail,
volume license, software maintenance, OEM and other Mac OS distribution
channels. Pricing and other details will be announced prior to product
availability.

Apple plans to include support for Open Transport in the following
products, as well as many unannounced products: QuickTime Conferencing,
Apple Remote Access, AppleShare, PowerTalk, PowerShare, MacX and the
Copland release of the Mac OS.

Developer Support for Open Transport

Apple began the seeding of Open Transport to developers over a year ago. To
date, over 5,000 developers have been seeded with the product and several
hundred developers are actively working with Apple on development
efforts.

"Open Transport is a major breakthrough for Macintosh developers and will
help StarNine compete even more aggressively against UNIX alternatives as
we support it across our Internet server product line," said Chuck
Shotton, senior vice-president of engineering at StarNine, a developer of
mail and messaging and Internet software products, and author of WebSTAR,
the industry-leading World Wide Web server for Macintosh. "We expect to
see a substantial increase in the performance of our applications,
especially on PowerPC machines. Moreover, Open Transport will enable our
server software to support as many simultaneous connections as memory
allows, another major plus for our customers."

"Open Transport makes Neon Software's LANsurveyor and NetMinder Ethernet
applications native PowerPC support even more compelling," said Michael
Swan, president of Neon Software, Inc., a developer of Mac OS based
network troubleshooting and management software. "Apple Computer and Neon
Software customers can expect to see significant network performance
increases by using Open Transport."

"We are extremely committed to help make Open Transport a success and will
support this new Apple technology going forward--this includes full
support of the technology from within Metrowerks CodeWarrior from both a
compiler and a library support perspective," said Greg Galanos, president
& CEO, Metrowerks Inc., a leading developer of PowerPC compilers, linkers
and other development tools.

The following software developers have recently announced support for Open
Transport: Systematics Softworks GmbH Systemberatung, Hi Resolution
Software LTD, Linne Data AB, Pole Position Software GmbH and Neon
Software, Inc.

The following software developers have previously announced support for
Open Transport: The AG Group (Net Watchman), Dantz Development Corporation
(Retrospect), Farallon Computing, Inc. (Timbuktu), InterCon Systems
Corporation (TCP/ConnectII), Metrowerks Inc. (CodeWarrior and PowerPlant),
Northwestern University (NewsWatcher), Novell, Inc. (NetWare protocols and
client for Mac OS), AGE Logic, Inc. (PacerShare/PacerPrint, PacerTerm),
SoftArc Inc. (FirstClass), StarNine Technologies Inc., University of
Michigan (X.500), Vicom Technology (VICOM RunTime, MultiTerm, Pro SDK),
The Wollongong Group (PathWay Access), Walker Richer and Quinn, Inc.
(Reflection for Macintosh) and Wall Data, Incorporated (SNA*ps).

In addition to developing for the PCI-bus, the following hardware
developers have announced support for Open Transport: Asante Technologies,
Digital Equipment Corporation, Farallon Computing, Inc., Hermstedt GmbH,
InnoSys, Inc., Interphase Corporation, Newer Technology, Rockwell
International, SCii Telecom and Spectra Systems, and 4-Sight International
Limited.
