Apple Smashes Price Barrier to Bring Affordable, High-Quality Laser
Printing to Individual Desktops

LaserWriter 4/600 PS Offers 600 DPI PostScript Printing to Small Office,
Home, Education and Workgroup Users

CUPERTINO, California--June 19, 1995--In connection with a sweeping update
of offerings from its Printer Products division, Apple Computer Inc. today
announced it has broken the price performance barrier for high-quality
desktop laser printing. The Apple LaserWriter 4/600 PS, a new monochrome
laser printer for Apple Macintosh and Power Macintosh computers, offers
600 dots per inch (DPI) PostScript printing for under $1,000.

"With the LaserWriter 4/600 PS, we've made the outstanding print quality
found in our network laser printers available to the personal printer
customer at an outstanding price," said Terry Bailey, senior director for
Apple's printer products. "Apple is making PostScript printing more
affordable than ever before for home, education and small business
users."

The LaserWriter 4/600 PS is capable of printing 106 line screens and 126
shades of gray, making it one of the best grayscale image printers of its
type on the market today. It ships with 64 TrueType and PostScript fonts
and features a speedy RISC processor. For those who wish to use the
printer in a workgroup, built-in LocalTalk provides easy networking
capability. The printer is also equipped with the LaserWriter Bridge 2.0
software, making it capable of integrating into offices served by
EtherTalk and TokenTalk networks. The LaserWriter 4/600 PS uses Apple's
new naming strategy which easily identifies speed (four pages per minute)
and resolution (600 DPI) for its line of laser printers.

A new desktop printing feature lets users move print jobs from the desktop
more easily than ever before. This works by creating a Desktop Printer
Icon the first time users select the printer from the chooser window.
Users then simply drag their files to the icon, automatically launching
the application, turning on the printer and bringing up the print dialog
box. Once the icons appear, the user does not have to go to the chooser
window again.

"The addition of a 600 DPI personal laser printer rounds out Apple's
printer line nicely," said Robert J. FeMell, director and principal
analyst with the Document Management Group at Dataquest. "This, coupled
with the other announcements from Apple's printer group today, underscores
Apple's commitment to providing high-quality printer technology to every
type of user at extremely aggressive prices. As a technology innovator,
Apple is ideally positioned to provide leading solutions to its
customers."

Weighing in at only 15 pounds, the Apple Personal LaserWriter 4/600 PS is
ideal for small and home offices with limited space. It complies with the
EPAIs Energy Star standards and features an energy saving "sleep mode"
that completely shuts the printer down between uses. "Instant awake"
technology all but eliminates printer warm-up time. When it's not in use,
the printer runs on less than a scant 10 watts of power and makes
virtually no noise.
