Arcada Software Teams With Compaq to Offer Preemptive Disaster Protection
Services for Windows 95

-- Arcada SMART Client Provides Automated L AN Backup Protection for
Failing Hard Disks --

LAKE MARY, Fl. (June 13, 1995) -- In an effort to provide more reliable
disaster protection, Arcada Software and Compaq Computer Corporation have
partnered to deliver technology that predicts an impending hard disk
failure across a LAN and automatically launches an agent-based backup.
Called Backup Exec SMART (Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting
Technology) Client, the solution runs as a Windows 95 system service and
leverages the Arcada Windows 95 agent and Compaq's Intelligent
Manageability system software.

"By partnering together? we were able to quickly develop the proactive tape
backup solution and ensure that it was fully integrated to support Backup
Exec," said Pat Hanavan, NetWare business unit director for Arcada. "This
was a natural extension to the Windows 95 agent that Arcada licensed to
Microsoft."

System Lets Administrators Prepare for Hard Disk Failures

In a network environment, the system administrator typically focuses on
after-the-fact disaster recovery. By making users aware of their impending
hard disk failures, this preemptive disaster recovery system lets the
administrator take action before disaster strikes.

"Arcada's SMART Client is an integral part of our strategy for the
IntelliSafe disk fault prediction technology imbedded within our new
Deskpro systems, because it offers a critical follow-up component to the
system," said Kevin Bohren, vice president of the Deskpro business unit at
Compaq. "The proactive backup utility provided by Arcada's SMART Client
takes this concept to the next level, ensuring that client data is secure
and protected."

SMART Client Essential to Disaster Prevention and Recovery System

The disaster prevention system is comprised of three Windows 95 system
services that inform the user that their hard disk is going to fail, and
then immediately backs up their data to tape. These three components are:

* Compaq's hardware component manager -- part of the company's Intelligent
Management system for IntelliSafe hard drives, it detects the impending
hard disk failure and posts an alert

* Arcada's Backup Exec SMART Client -- recognizes the hardware component
manager alert and submits a backup job to the Backup Exec for NetWare tape
server

* Arcada's Backup Exec Windows 95 Agent -- reads all the information off
the failing hard disk, including the Windows 95-specific information such
as the Registry, long file names and long folder names, and then sends
this information to the tape server

Pricing and Availability

Backup Exec SMART Client will ship with Compaq's Deskpro systems containing
Windows 95, making it available concurrent with Microsoft's release of the
Windows 95 operating system.
