Legacy introduces patented new mass storage tape technology at PC Expo

New York, June 20,1995 ... Legacy Storage Systems International Inc. (Booth
#2247) today unveiled at the PC Expo show a new patented high-capacity,
high-performance mass storage tape system capable of storing up to 1,500
GB (1.5 terabytes).

Developed for near on-line storage applications for a vast range of image
and document-intensive industries and designed for a networked
environment, the system represents a significant technological
breakthrough, allowing users to store up to 50 Gigabytes on a single 12mm
tape. System capacity can be scaled depending upon cost/growth
requirements from an entry-level system with two transports and 100 GB
capacity up to a full 30-transport, 1.5 TB array.

The Legacy 12mm tape system supports ethernet networks and uses standard
NFS protocols for file transfer so that the system appears to the user
like an extremely high-capacity disk. Under the control of proprietary
data management software, data files are migrated to and from the tape
array. The average access time is 30 seconds and data is transferred at a
sustained rate of 2 MB per second. The system is equipped with a front-end
cache disk drive of 4 GB. Recently-accessed files are stored on this
internal cache disk and are immediately available without any tape access
delay.

"Unlike robotic tape systems, the near on-line system's tapes remain in
their transports, allowing file searches to proceed in parallel for
multiple requests," said Donald Waugh, President of Quasarmetrics Inc.,
the wholly-owned Legacy subsidiary responsible for marketing the new
system. "This not only improves access to data, but also increases system
reliability. If a tape drive should fail on the Legacy tape system, it is
hot swappable. However, if a robotic systems fails, the entire system is
down."

The Legacy 12mm near on-line mass storage tape system is targeted towards
mid- to high-end computer data storage market applications such as
document imaging for the financial, legal, insurance, engineering and
manufacturing industries; imaging and data storage for medical and health
care services; GIS systems; seismic surveying; electronic page assembly;
digital storage for the broadcast and music industries, and for government
archives, forms and filings.
