PANASONIC OFFERS LIGHTWEIGHT AND ECONOMICAL PORTABLE CD-ROM DRIVE

CD-ROM drive bundled with PCMCIA Type II SCSI II card

New York, NY, June 20, 1995 - The recently introduced KXL-D720 PCMCIA
portable CD-ROM drive from Panasonic Communications & Systems Company
(PCSC), a division of Matsushita Electric Corp. of America, will be on
display at Booth #3160. The lightweight, economical portable drive, weighs
just 14 ounces, comes bundled with a PCMCIA Type II SCSI II card and
carries a suggested retail price of $399 .

Designed for notebook users who need constantly updated data, the new
Panasonic KXL-D720 is a plug-and-play device that connects to a notebook
computer through a standard PCMCIA Type II card, or to a desktop computer
equipped with a SCSI II interface. The PCMCIA portable CD-ROM drive is
being targeted to mobile business users, such as those in insurance,
transportation, warehousing, medical and sales.

"Panasonic made the decision to introduce a CD-ROM drive that has practical
business applications under the most demanding portable conditions," said
Timothy J. Curran, vice president of Panasonic's Computer Products Group.
"Bundling the PCMCIA card not only adds increased value for the user, but
makes our new drive a true plug-and-play unit." According to Mr. Curran,
Panasonic will be introducing versions of the PCMCIA portable CD-ROM drive
in phases which will include a Macintosh PowerBook drive with PowerBook
software, and a drive with an integrated sound card later in 1995.

The Panasonic KXL-D720 has a 300 kB-per-second transfer rate, 250
millisecond access speed and 128 kB memory buffer. It operates on six AA
batteries, providing up to two hours of data and four hours of audio. A
power save feature reverts to the "sleep mode" after four minutes of
non-usage. The new PCMCIA portable CD-ROM drive is compatible with CD DA,
Photo CD Multisession, Video CD and CD-I formats and doubles as an audio
CD player.

"Until recently, there were no practical CD-ROM solutions for portable
computers. They have been either too slow, too expensive or too big," says
John Gawa, marketing manager, Multimedia Products. "Ours is the first
truly fast, lightweight and affordable PCMCIA drive and it is only half
the size of letter-sized paper." Dimensions are 5.52" wide x 1.4" high x
8" deep.

Unique among CD-ROM drive manufacturers is the Panasonic technical support
that provides 24-hour/7-day service. A two-year limited warranty is also
included. The Panasonic KXL-D720 has been available since February through
Panasonic computer distributors and resellers.
