POWERPC ALLIANCE ANNOUNCES FIRST MAINSTREAM DESKTOP MICROPROCESSOR TO REACH
THE NEXT GENERATION OF PERFORMANCE

Doubles PowerPC Chip Performance in Less Than a Year

AUSTIN, TX, June 12, 1995 -- IBM and Motorola today unveiled two
high-powered extensions to the PowerPC 604 line of RISC-based
microprocessors, establishing a new level of PowerPC chip performance for
desktop personal computers.

These new versions of the PowerPC 604 microprocessor operate at 133 and 120
MHz, performance that exceeds Intel's current Pentium offerings and is
comparable to the future P6 microprocessor. With this announcement, IBM
and Motorola double desktop PowerPC chip performance in less than a year
and offer the first mainstream desktop microprocessor capable of achieving
a SPECint92 performance rating of 200.

"Today, our slowest PowerPC 604 processor outperforms Intel's fastest PC
microprocessor," said Ron Black, director of PowerPC microprocessor
marketing, IBM Microelectronics Division. Continued innovation and
investment by the Apple, IBM, Motorola development alliance allows us to
develop and incorporate the most advanced, next generation technologies,
including Reduced Instruction Set Computing (RISC), faster floating point
operations and superscalar implementation. That's how we will maintain our
processor lead."

"By introducing these new PowerPC 604 chips, the alliance continues to show
its strength and commitment to deliver the industry's next microprocessor
standard," said Phil Pompa, director of marketing, Motorola RISC
Microprocessor Division. "The PowerPC 604 at 133 MHz provides unsurpassed
processor performance for high-performance desktop and server
applications."

The new PowerPC 604 processors are expected to show up in desktop systems
soon. The imminent arrival of systems based on 133 and 120 MHz PowerPC 604
microprocessors illustrate the growing ease of leveraging PowerPC
performance. Like all other PowerPC microprocessors, the two new chips
combine superior performance with the ability to run the fullest range of
operating systems and applications.

Organizations that have announced systems or plans to develop PowerPC
microprocessor-based systems include: Apple Computer, Canon, DayStar
Digital, FirePower Systems, Groupe Bull, Harris, Hitachi, IBM, IPC
Technologies, Parsytec, Power Computing, Pioneer, Radius, Tadpole, Tatung,
Thomson-CSF, Toshiba and YARC. In addition, the Taiwanese New PC
Consortium has announced its endorsement of the PowerPC architecture and
China's Ministry of Electronics industry has agreed to help promote the
use of PowerPC technology and the development of supporting software in
China.

Technical Specifications - PowerPC 604 120 MHz and 133 MHz

The 133 MHz PowerPC 604 processor has an estimated SPECint92 rating of 200
and an estimated SPECfp92 of 200. The 120 MHz PowerPC 604 microprocessor
is capable of an estimated SPECint92 rating of 180 and an estimated
SPECfp92 performance rating of 180. Each microprocessor has dual 16K byte
instruction and data caches, a die size of 12.4 mm x 15.8 mm and an
IEEE-754 compliant floating point unit. They each have 3.6 million
transistors and were designed using 0.5- micron process technology.

Both IBM and Motorola will manufacture the higher-speed versions of the
microprocessor with volume production expected in the second half of this
year. Specific pricing and availability will be announced separately by
IBM and Motorola.
