Seiko's New Low-Cost SLP Adds Features For Windows & Macintosh Versions

NEW YORK CITY, June 20, 1995 -- The Smart Label Printer from Seiko
Instruments USA today will make its debut at PC Expo at the Jacob Javits
Center in a new spruced-up low-priced package.

The Smart Label Printer EZ30. featuring both DOS/Windows and Macintosh
versions, will highlight the Seiko Instruments exhibit in booth 4252. It
began shipping last month.

An easier-to-use design, the ability to print on multiple label sizes and
new software highlight the features of the SLP EZ30, which also boasts a
new Lower price -- $199 suggested retail, and an expected street price
around $129, about $20 less than its predecessor, the SLP Plus.

SII has more than a half-million SLP users since it was introduced in 1989.
Weighing only a pound and occupying less desk space than a standard
rolodex, the SLP allows PC users to produce one-at-a-time labels for
envelopes, file folders, name badges and an assortment of applications,
including on-demand bar code printing.

The new EZ30 model? Like its big brother -- the full-featured SLP Pro
($299) -- accommodates a variety of label sizes up to one-inch wide,
including the shorter one inch by two-inch multipurpose labels, and labels
for VHS cassette spines; red, green and blue file folders, and 8
millimeter tape cartridges.

According to Rajeev Venkat, product manager for SII, the SLP EZ30 includes
both hardware and software for PC DOS/Windows or Macintosh versions.

PC users can instantly print labels from either Windows or DOS, even while
switching between the two operating systems. A common database and font
set are used -- the Windows version works as a Windows application and the
DOS version works as a TSR.

In the Windows version, the SLP EZ30 also allows users to copy and paste
text and graphics with the Windows Clipboard. create personalized labels
with a variety of fonts and four bar code fonts, and mix text, graphics
and bar code fonts on a single label. It also includes a Windows print
driver to print from other applications.

Both Windows and DOS versions offer a "Smart Capture" feature that allows
addresses that appear on the screen (letters, etc. from most popular word
processor programs) to be automatically identified and captured for
immediate printing, thus saving time and keystrokes, Venkat said.

Vertical or horizontal printing is possible along with automatic POSTNET
postal bar coding for quicker mail delivery and possible discounts. An
unlimited number of label formats can be created and saved through
user-definable icons, and the label database allows for convenient label
categorizing and file merging.

The DOS version offers WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) user
interface and the software can run as a pop-up program in as little as 8K
of random access memory (RAM).

The new Macintosh version can print U.S. Post Office POSTNET bar codes,
simple graphics and selected labels. and create. save and apply label
formats. It can create multiple lists to save favorite labels. and it will
import and export label documents. A SmartCode feature automatically
configures the software to new and different label types and sizes.
