SMART SHIPS DIRECT-CONNECT CELLULAR PCMCIA DATA/FAX MODEM WITH MNP-10EC --
MORE PERFORMANCE, EASY CONNECTION

Cellular Users Get Greater Reliability And Easy Direct Connectability With
Popular Phones

FREMONT, CA--April 17, 1995--Smart Modular Technologies (SMART) announced
today it is shipping its SMART ST1414C, direct-connection cellular PCMCIA
fax modem. The SMART 1414C provides the ever-expanding mobile work force
with the capability of transmitting data and faxes over the cellular phone
system. The ST1414C gives cellular users the highest degree of performance
and reliability by incorporating cellular error control and direct
connectability into the modem. No bulky external equipment or intermediate
switch boxes are necessary to connect the cellular phone to the modem.

The SMART 1414C incorporates MNP 10EC (Enhanced Cellular protocol designed
specifically for cellular use) that enables over two times the throughput
of standard MNP 10 modems. This results in lower cellular charges and
higher productivity. The inclusion of MNP 10EC technology allows the SMART
1414C backward compatibility to the large installed-base of MNP 10 and
LAPM protocols. This provides greater throughput and increased
connectivity even if a SMART ST1414C is only one of the modems in the
communications link. The SMART 1414C offers flexible error control
connection creating a clear benefit over proprietary cellular solutions
requiring the same non-standard scheme on both sides of the connection.

The ST1414C cellular solution enables users to access information from
areas without access to land lines. By incorporating the MNP-10EC protocol
on the ST1414C, users can make cellular connections that will stay
connected. According to independent tests, modems such as SMART's ST1414C
outfitted with the MNNP-10EC protocol, consistently outperform
non-MNP-10EC modems and in many cases connect up to 25% more often and
exhibit 30% higher throughput rates.

"The SMART direct-connection cellular PCMCIA fax modem gets users connected
and keeps them connected," said Ajay Shah, president of SMART. "The
ST1414C offers faster initial connections between modems and quicker data
transfer. This results in the highest degree of reliability and
performance to support the demands of mobile users. In addition, this
technology allows connections to fall forward to the highest speed more
quickly when optimum conditions are present."
The power requirements for the ST1414C are among the industry's lowest and
help to prolong notebook battery life by utilizing no more than 130mA when
operating, 25mA in standby mode and just 6mA in sleep mode.

The modem portion of the ST1414C supports:

* 14.4 Kbps transmit and receive, with fallback capability
* MNP 2 - 5, V.42bis and V.42; allows up to 57.6 Kbps throughput
* V.32bis, V.32, V.22bis, V.22, V.21, Bell 212 and Bell 103
* Auto line equalization for poor connections
* AT command set compatible
* 165500 UART

The fax portion of the ST1414C supports:

* EIA Class 1 & 2 command sets for fax
* Group 3 Standards
* 14.4 Kbps transmit and receive
* Sending of faxes through Windows applications
* Printing of incoming faxes on HP Laser Jet and most other printers
* Scheduling of faxes to take advantage of more economical telephone
  rates
* Faxes to multiple destinations
* V.17, V.29, V.27ter transmit and receive
* and includes DOS/Windows communications software

Additional features of the ST1414C are a built-in phone interface with an
internal DAA and the availability of switchless configuration for COM 1
through COM 4. The product also includes SMART's EZ-Install software that
ensures effortless set-up. The ST1414C is PCMCIA (PC Card) Release 2.X,
and inserts into a Type II or Type III slot.
