SMART SHIPS V.34 28.8 KBPS PCMCIA DATA/DATA/FAX MODEM AT MSRP OF $399

Value-Added Design With Unique Solid State Line Interface Provides High
Performance, Reliability, And Ultra Low Power Requirement

FREMONT, CA--April 17, 1995--Smart Modular Technologies (SMART) announced
today it is shipping the SMART ST2814 V.34 PCMCIA data/fax modem and
announced a new manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $399. The
SMART ST2814 is intended for mobile users who want state-of-the-art
technology, lower transmission costs and increased transmission capacity,
while protecting their investment against future obsolescence. In
addition, SMART's ST2814 is designed to meet the ITU V.34, 28.8 Kbps
specifications which allows end users to take advantage of the cost
savings this new technology offers.

One of the ST2814's main features is a unique solid-state line DAA (Direct
Access Arrangement) interface between the modem and the phone line that
enables data to pass through without additional noise. Modems using
traditional transformer based line interfaces are notorious for actually
introducing additional line noise and distortion beyond that which
naturally exists on the line. Because V.34 technology pushes the data
transmission limits of what ordinary telephone lines can handle, the
critical path through the DAA becomes important since it does not produce
additional noise. With a solid-state DAA the result is better high speed
connection rates and greater reliability of data transmission.

SMART's ST2814 is backward compatible to the over one million installed
V.Fast (V.FC) modems that were purchased prior to the implementation of
the full ITU V.34 standard. Most V.34 PCMCIA data/fax modems being sold
today are not backward compatible to V.Fast at 28.8kbps speeds. Through
the incorporation of V.Fast compatibility, SMART allows its users the
flexibility to connect to a whole host of products at 28.8 Kbps speeds not
possible with other V.34 modems.

"All V.34 28.8 Kbps data/fax modems are not created equal!" said Ajay Shah,
president of SMART. The majority of V.34 PCMCIA data/fax modems come
standard with transformer-based interfaces. SMART gives mobile users the
fastest 28.8 Kbps data/fax modem available while insuring the reliability
of communications," "SMART's ST2814's unique solid-state line interface,
true support of the ITU V.34 standard, and insistence on complete backward
compatibility to the over one million installed V.Fast class data/fax
modems provides users with both the flexibility of high-speed connections
and reliable performance they expect."

SMART's ST2814 PCMCIA data/fax modem transmits data reliably at speeds 100%
faster than V.32bis to meet the PC market demands for highest speed modem
capabilities. Data compression further enables speeds of up to 115.2kbps.

SMART provides all industry standard V.34 features, including full error
control and data compression. Installation and use of the ST2814 is as
easy as possible due to the inclusion of SMART's EZ-Install software
ensuring effortless set-up. As to not burden the user's notebook memory,
SMART has designed the product to operate on low power requirements. The
SMART ST2814's operating requirement is only 150 mA, with standby of 25
mA, and sleep mode an ultra low 6 mA.
