XEROX' TextBridge Pro Takes Top-Tier Honors at Fourth Annual ISRI OCR
Technology Assessment Test

Xerox' OCR Engine Achieves First-Tier Ranking for Conversion Accuracy and
Outperforms Competition in Data Throughput

PALO ALTO, Calif.--April 26, 1995--Xerox today announced that its new
document-recognition engine, included in its flagship Optical Character
Recognition (OCR) product TextBridge Professional Edition 3.0, received
top-tier honors for its conversion accuracy and data throughput in the
fourth annual test conducted by the Information Science Research Institute
(ISRI) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

The study, which compared Xerox' beta version of its document recognition
engine against major OCR engines from such companies as Caere Corporation,
Hewlett-Packard Labs, Electronic Document Technology and Recognita, found
that "The best overall accuracy on binary images was achieved by Caere
OCR, HP Labs OCR, and the XIS [Xerox] OCR Engine. We observed no
significant differences in accuracy among those systems, with one
exception: HP Labs OCR was out-performed by the other two systems on
standard-mode fax images."

According to the study, the rate at which the engines accurately converted
binary scans of paper-based characters into electronic format ranged from
94.51 percent for Xerox and 94.26 percent for Caere (on a sample of
standard-mode faxes) to 98.88 percent for Xerox and 98.97 percent for
Caere (on a sample of newspaper pages). Xerox' highly accurate conversion
rate earned a first-tier ranking. Caere's pre-release OCR engine was the
only other entrant from a company that offers commercially available OCR
products that earned a first-tier ranking.

Major Gains in Throughput

While no significant difference in accuracy existed between Caere and
Xerox, the study concluded that Xerox' OCR throughput was 100 to 300
percent faster than Caere's, depending on the document sample. According
to the study, throughput is defined as the speed at which the systems
convert the image into computer-readable text while penalizing for errors.
This metric becomes critical for the end-user evaluating OCR software
packages because, given Caere's and Xerox' comparable accuracy, the next
reasonable criterion is how quickly the system can complete the task.

"We are very excited to find that Xerox' new document recognition engine,
called DocuRT (Document Recognition Technology), delivered such a high
level of accuracy and unsurpassed throughput," said Mike Tivnan, vice
president and general manager of the Software Products Group, Xerox
Desktop Document Systems. "The new engine provides a powerful combination
of accuracy and speed that our customers demand in order to meet their
productivity requirements. This test has proven that Xerox, with its
TextBridge Pro product, has become the technology leader in the
fast-growing and highly-competitive OCR market."
The study also included a test of how accurately the OCR engine determined
the order of text flow. According to the study, the Xerox OCR engine
performed the best overall on this test.

The Technology Assessment was conducted using several metrics, and scanning
was completed at 200, 300 and 400 dpi. Each OCR system processed the same
zoned portions of the same binary images under automated control. Scanned
samples were then tested against specific metrics: character accuracy,
effect of resolution, effect of page quality, word accuracy, marked
character recognition, and automatic zoning.

TextBridge Pro's character recognition accuracy is the result of Xerox'
breakthrough DocuRT software technology. DocuRT enables TextBridge Pro to
read one or more scanned or faxed images, perform format analysis and OCR
on the images, and output a fully-editable text file that remains true to
the original document. DocuRT comprises multiple technologies developed by
teams of scientists at the famed Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC),
the Xerox Webster Research Center, and the Xerox Desktop Document Systems
Division.

Pricing and Availability

TextBridge Professional Edition 3.0 will be available in May 1995, with an
expected street price of less than $250 (U.S.). Xerox will be offering a
special "TextBridge Advantage" program for users of other OCR products,
giving them the opportunity to upgrade to a TextBridge Professional
Edition for $199.
