Accton Kicks Off RedBox Products with PCI Server Adapter for NetWare

New NIC Chip Architecture Expected to Deliver Up To Five Times the Speed of
EISA Adapters in NetWare File Servers

February 15, 1994 -- BOSTON--At Networks Expo '94 Boston today, Accton
Technology Corporation introduced the first network adapter cards from its
RedBox Division, a new business group that is creating connectivity
solutions for Novell NetWare workgroups. Accton's new RedBox NET 3200CT
PCI adapters are ideal for NetWare server applications thanks to a new
integrated circuit design that delivers up to five times the performance
of conventional EISA adapters.

The NET 3200CT PCI Ethernet adapter is based on the Peripheral Component
Interconnection (PCI) local bus architecture, which interfaces directly
with the system processor. The NET 3200CT PCI has a full 32-bit data path
with bus mastering. The NET 3200CT PCI uses a direct memory access (DMA)
Ethernet chip architecture with a deep FIFO memory to minimize CPU
utilization so the system's CPU can handle increased system bus activity.
The microarchitecture supports full duplex Ethernet operation with data
transfer rates of 20 megabits per second in switched Ethernet
applications.

This a local bus architecture, the clock speed of the bus matches the speed
of the computer's microprocessor. As a result, packet data can be handled
at rates from 50 to 100 MHz, depending on the microprocessor. And since
the chip architecture is processor-independent, the adapter can support
486, Pentium, Alpha, and RISC-based computers.

The NET 3200CT is an excellent adapter for both servers and
high-performance workstations. The NET 3200CT PCI is ready for NetWare
with support from Novell's recently announced Universal NetWare Client.
Using Virtual Loadable Modules (VLMs) in place of the previous NETX shell,
the Universal NetWare Client can support NetWare 2, 3, 4, and Personal
NetWare. The Universal NetWare Client includes a full suite of
connectivity support services accessible via Microsoft Windows, offering
direct access to NetWare file and print services from Windows File
Manager, Print Manager, and Control Panel. The Universal NetWare Client
also features optimized Memory Management With memory swapping, enhanced
data transport services using packet burst and Large Internet Packet (LIP)
support, and a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) client.

"The speed of the PCI architecture will make this new adapter a natural
choice for NetWare servers," said Marshall Behling, Director or Marketing
for Accton. "We expect PCI to quickly eclipse EISA as the new server
standard. And with support for the Universal NetWare Client, Novell VARs
will be able to provide plug-and-play support for their
performance-oriented customers, for all flavors of NetWare."

The NET 3200CT PCI features self-configuring 10BASE-T (RJ-45) and 10BASE-2
(BNC) ports. In addition to the Universal NetWare Client, the adapters
includes NDIS drivers to support Microsoft Lan Manager, IBM LAN Server,
Digital PATHWORKS, Banyan VINES, and Wollongong's Pathway Access; and
Packet Drivers to support FTP, TCP/IP, and NCSA Telnet.

The NET 3200CT is expected to ship in March. It will carry a retail price
of $249. The Accton RedBox group is including Novell's Universal NetWare
Client and additional driver software at no additional charge. Novell is
offering the Universal NetWare Client as a stand-alone software package
for $99 retail.

Accton Technology Corporation manufactures workgroup connectivity hardware
and software, including a complete product line for Ethernet and
Token-Ring applications. Accton has been ranked as one of the top 10
manufacturers of Ethernet adapters by International Data Corporation, and
the first Ethernet adapter vendor to receive ISO-9001 certification.
