Accton's New EtherHub System Integrates SNMP Agent into 12-port
Concentrator

New Plug-and-Play EtherHub-12mi Intelligent Hub Ideal Solution to Add SNMP
Management to Network Workgroups

Feb 1, 1994 -- SAN JOSE, Calif.--Accton Technology Corporation today
introduced the EtherHub-12mi, a new stackable Ethernet concentrator for
the company's EtherHub 1000 System. Designed to bring plug-and-play
network management support to Ethernet workgroups, the EtherHub-12mi
(EN2022) is a 12-port 10Base-T concentrator with an internal Simple
Network Management Protocol (SNMP) agent. With the EtherHub-12mi, network
managers gain immediate control of their 10Base-T workgroups for as low as
$61 per managed port.

Accton was the first to ship a stackable SNMP-based Ethernet hub solution
when the company introduced the EtherHub 1000 System in 192. The EtherHub
1000 System now has five primary components:

* The EtherHub-12i 12-port 10Base-T concentrator;
* The EtherHub-8Ci 8-port coaxial concentrator;
* The EtherHub-6Fi 6-port fiber concentrator;
* The EtherHub-MGT network management console; and
* The EtherHub-12mi.

With the EtherHub 1000 System, a network architect can daisy-chain
different concentrators together, even intermixing cabling environments.
SNMP-based network management can be added at any time by installing
either the EtherHub-MGT or the new EtherHub-12mi, since both units include
an internal SNMP agent; the interconnecting cable becomes a high-speed
backbone.

The new EtherHub-12mi combines an SNMP agent with a 12-port 10Base-T
concentrator in a single unit. Like the EtherHub-12i, the EtherHub-12mi
has 12 10Base-T (RJ-45) station ports to support unshielded twisted-pair
cabling. Up to 13 EtherHub units can be cascaded into a single
SNMP-manageable network through Accton's high-speed FlexBus. The agent in
a single EtherHub-12mi unit can be used to manage up to 13 EtherHub-12i,
EtherHub-8Ci, EtherHub-6Fi, or EtherHub-12mi units in any combination. The
EtherHub-12mi can use any standards-based network management software
package, such as SunNet Manager, HP OpenView, Novell NMS, or Accton's own
AccView/Open.

The EtherHub-12mi is also the first unit to include Accton's SmartWatch hub
LED display on the front panel. The LEDs form a bar graph; color-coded
green, yellow, and red indicates network utilization at a glance.
Additional LEDs are also provided to highlight AUI, BNC, collision, and
Jabber problems.

Accton is the only manufacturer to offer tri-segment memory, which
encompasses DRAM, EPROM, and FLASH memory support to upgrade the SNMP
agent in the EtherHub-12mi. If users want to add new functionality or
change their SNMP agent, they can use DRAM to provide immediate or
temporary SNMP agent support, and then load permanent agent information
into FLASH memory. EPROM memory stores the original factory configuration
in the event FLASH memory is corrupted. The EtherHub-12mi is also
hot-swappable, so it can be upgraded or modified in the field without
disrupting network service.

To support the EtherHub-12mi, Accton is offering the latest release of its
network management software package, AccView/Open V2.0. Designed to run
under Microsoft Windows 3.1, AccView/Open is a drag-and-drop network
management software (NMS) solution with auto discovery capable of
administering both Accton and third-party hardware using SNMP.
AccView/Open includes its own MIB compiler so information from a
third-party MIB file can be inserted into a device definition for use with
AccView/Open. This gives administrators direct control of additional SNMP
MIB-II supported hardware as well, including hubs, bridges, and routers. A
MIB tree browser is also provided so the user can scan any MIB (using
definitions compiled within the MIB compiler). Alerts, logs, and events
can be set for any MIB variance. Using AccView/Open as an event manager,
network alarms can be displayed on-screen, or alerts can be forwarded as
email, pager, or FAX messages using third-party applications.

"Now our customers can wire their workgroups 12 users at a time, and still
add SNMP support with 12 additional ports at any time by installing a
single EtherHub-12mi." noted Marshall Behling, Marketing Director of
Accton North America. "The EtherHub-12mi makes network management very
affordable for workgroup users, since the hardware is priced competitively
with unintelligent 10Base-T concentrators and the support software can be
added at any time for very little cost. It also makes it easy to
administer heterogeneous networks, and it can export SNMP data for
analysis using a relational database. The EtherHub-12mi represents the
latest in network management technology and offers maximum flexibility for
a minimal investment."

The EtherHub-12mi is available now for a list price of $1,1199.
AccView/Open is available for $499, which includes a full year of
technical support and free software updates and upgrades.

Accton Technology Corporation manufactures workgroup connectivity hardware
