MacSQ for Windows Technical Data Sheet

Description

MacSQ is an utility for reading and writing Apple Macintosh SyQuest
cartridges (44 and 88 MB) on a PC. Under DOS, MacSQ offers a
semi-graphical user interface to simplify file handling, importing and
exporting. As a Windows application, MacSQ for Windows offers the
well-known user-friendliness of the Microsoft graphical user interface.

Targeted users

MacSQ is aimed primarily at the mid-level desktop publishing market (text
and illustration file exchanges between Mac and PC, for example between
the Macintosh and Windows versions of PageMaker, Quark Xpress, etc.).
MacSQ users typically produce black & white or entry-level color DTP
output. MacSQ also covers the transfer needs of data-intensive business
software such as spreadsheets and database files.

Hardware configuration

PC or compatible with SyQuest cartridge drive. MacSQ directly drives
Adaptec host adapters (and all other ASPI-compatible configurations) under
Windows and DOS. Under DOS, it also supports a number of low-cost 8 bit
adapters (SyDos, D2), other special boards (Longshine IDE/SCSI controller)
and some parallel port solutions (Puma, Para D2). File size (on disk) 200
KB. Program size (in RAM) under 130 KB.

Technical characteristics

Transient program (not a Terminate and Stay Resident) for reading and
writing Macintosh SyQuest cartridges (44 and 88 MB), including the 88
'extra' or 'C' models (which now also read and write 44 MB cartridges).

MacSQ is a transfer utility and does not alter the content of the files.
Most applications existing in both PC and Macintosh versions offer
extensive import/export functions, which cover daily needs.

Available functions:

* Copying of files/directories to/from the Macintosh SyQuest
cartridge. (including copying PC directories with
subdirectories, which are recreated on the Macintosh in the
form of folders and subfolders, and vice-versa for copying from
PC to Macintosh, with complete reconstruction of the file-tree
  structure of the original volume).
* Editing Macintosh file/directory names and Macintosh volume
  labels.
* Deleting Macintosh files/directories (including complete
  directories with files and subdirectories).
* For copyright reasons (Macintosh SyQuest cartridges must carry
their driver), the formatting function is not yet validated.
Utilities are included for copying and uploading the file
handling structure of an empty formatted cartridge (similar to
the /Q switch of the MS-DOS Format command).
* Creation of Macintosh subdirectories.
* Selective extraction of files on the Macintosh volume from the
  command line (automatic flashing systems).
* Under DOS, command line operation to automate most reading and
  writing operations (batch files).
* Direct copying from the Macintosh volume to the PC's parallel
or serial port. Display and editing of Macintosh file
  attributes (creator, type, date).
* Assignment of file signatures according to DOS file extensions
(DOC for Word, XLS for Excel, etc.) with possibility of editing
the internal correspondence table according to user needs.
* Sensible treatment of accented characters.
* Includes a conversion utility between ASCII, ANSI and Text-only
  (DOS, Windows and Macintosh).

Installation

Unlike most Windows applications, MacSQ does not come with an installation
utility. Since such utilities invariably make more or less accurate
guesses about your configuration and often alter you system files without
telling you, we have opted for a more conservative approach. To install
MacSQ, you simply copy the program and its auxiliary files to a directory
of your choice. This procedure as well as the creation of a Windows
program item with the MacSQ icon are explained in the manual.

Matching of Mac and PC file names

MacSQ renames Macintosh files taking 8+3 legal characters of the Macintosh
name. If the name is short (maximum 8 bytes), MacSQ appends an extension
based on the file signature (file type and creator). Files copied to the
Macintosh are given a file signature (to which the Finder will assign an
icon), based on the DOS file extension (XLS = Excel, DOC = Word, etc.).
The internal correspondence table can be edited according to user needs.

Data and resource forks of Macintosh files

By default, MacSQ only copies the data fork. But you can also copy the
resource fork or both the data and the resources fork (including the
Finder header, compatible with the MacBinary standard).
