SYBASE CHOSEN BY LEADING DUTCH BANK TO DELIVER NEW COMPETITIVE EDGE

Rabobank, one of the Largest Bank in the World, Standardizes on SQL Server

EMERYVILLE, CA, February 1, 1994 -- Sybase, Inc., the Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced that Rabobank Ltd., headquartered
in Holland, has selected the SYBASE SQL Server 10 as the foundation of its
new client/server architecture. Running on a network of IBM RS/6000
servers, Sybase's SQL Server 10 database servers will form the basis of a
new, open network designed to provide Rabobank a competitive edge in
customer service and enhance productivity in its overall banking
operations. Other SYBASE System 10 products - Replication Server and SQL
Monitor - will be added to the network early this summer.

"We believe an open architecture client/server solution will provide us the
flexibility and infrastructure to build the distributed applications that
will give us an advantage in the highly competitive field of banking,"
said J.W.M. Wassenberg, MIS manager for the Rabobank group. "Sybase SQL
Server was the best choice for our requirements, providing an architecture
optimized for client/server as well as interfaces for linking into a range
of computing environments."

Formerly, Rabobank ran its banking operations and support functions on a
Tandem Guardian system and IBM mainframe. Now with the new SQL
Server-based client/server network, users - via their PC desktop - will
access operational data residing on both the Tandem and RS/6000 systems,
as well as historic data from a DB2 database residing on the IBM
mainframe. In addition to the headquarters installation for more than 100
users, SYBASE is installed in six of Rabobank's foreign offices. The
SYBASE installation is expected to provide tremendous cost savings, of
more than U.S. $2.5 million (5 million Dutch guilders) annually.

APIs Facilitate Data Access

An enabling product in Rabobank's installation is Sybase's Open Client
application programming interface (API). The Open Client API provides a
cohesive interface to users' various favorite front-end PC applications,
tools and interfaces, including those running under Microsoft Windows.
This increases productivity and reduces the time required to learn new
systems while maintaining day-to-day operations throughout the
transition.

"We have to allow users to access their data in ways that are familiar and
effective for them," said Willem Alink, Rabobank's senior information
manager charged with managing the SYBASE implementation. "This would be
too expensive to do with our existing, proprietary mainframe technology.
But the open and interoperability structure of SYBASE database servers
allows us to effectively utilize client applications on PCs and
workstations, minimizing our costs."

Fast Application Development

Another advantage of the SYBASE software is the ability to quickly and
easily develop new applications that support the business objectives of
Rabobank. With over 50 offices worldwide, Rabobank is in a unique position
to use client/server technology as a direct weapon for increased
international competition. Examples of new applications made possible with
SYBASE software include:

* Expediting the loan application process through new customer
  registration and quotation applications.
* Reducing the amount of time required to process customer
statements through new account management systems.
* Enhancing customer service and support offerings globally,
  through foreign office management systems.
* Increasing the amount of transactions that can be processed
  within a specific time frame.

"With Sybase's client/server software and the RS/6000, we believe we have
selected the combination of technology that will allow our applications to
grow along with our business," said Alink.

Rabobank

Rabobank is the third largest bank in the Netherlands, and one of three
rated banks worldwide (UBS and Deutsche Bank are the others) to receive
the AAA rating for superior solvency and performance. With a value of
approximately US $122 billion (241.5 billion Dutch guilders) and annual
profits of U.S. $295 million (590 million Dutch guilders) Rabobank employs
over 39,000 people worldwide and has operations in 50 foreign offices.
