RACAL-DATACOM INTRODUCES T1 / FRACTIONAL T1
FULLY FEATURED DSU AND AUTOMATIC ISDN BACKUP

January 25, 1994 -- SUNRISE, FL. -- Automatic ISDN backup for multirate
CSU/DSU dedicated services and a fully featured T1/fractional T1 DSU are
among the products introduced by Racal-Datacom Jan. 25 at the ComNet trade
show in Washington, D.C.

The Racal-Datacom Excalibur Digital Access Product with Integrated ISDN
Dial Backup is the first DSU on the marketplace with dial backup through
the ISDN B channel services, according to John Brandte, division vice
president of digital access products.

The Excalibur ISX 5300 is a fully featured, fully network-managed
T1/fractional T1 DSU that will be extremely competitive in the
marketplace, since it adapts to the emerging applications that need more
bandwidth beyond 56 Kbps.

"With these two products we are introducing at ComNet '94, we are
demonstrating our product line expansion along two directions," Brandte
said. "With the ISX 5300, we are increasing the bandwidth available to DSU
customers in quantities they haven't had. This product takes advantage of
the new tariffs and new services that are available giving multiples of 56
kilobits right up to full T1 circuits. This product will be available as a
standalone and as a central site unit.

"With the introduction of our ISDN backup, we provide customers another
alternative allowing them to minimize the downtime they might suffer in
the event of disruption to their primary access circuits. We expect that
when the tariffs are adjusted for ISDN service, users will pay the same or
less for 56 kilobits of ISDN B channel use than they are currently paying
for a voice line utilizing V.32bis dial backup that provides only a
maximum of 14.4 kilobits of dial backup. ISDN backup will be available in
standalone and central site applications."

These and future products are part of the Racal-Datacom Excalibur program
established more than three years ago, starting with the Excalibur Digital
Access Products for standalone and central site environments. "We have
been expanding the program for DDS access service, Excalibur Single-Ended
T- 1, which allows a central site to be fed the DDS channels through a T-
1 feed, and more powerful dial restoral," he said.

Racal-Datacom offers Excalibur Dial Restoral System for automatic
restoration of circuits used by Excalibur Digital Access Products; and
recently introduced Excalibur Dial Restoral System for Excalibur
Single-Ended T-1, which allows sparing of dedicated access devices and
eliminates the need for external bridging when backing up multidrop
circuits.

The ISDN backup and the ISX 5300 continue to extend this flexibility.

The Excalibur ISX 5300 DSU works under the umbrella of the Excalibur
Network Access Resource (ENAR).

ENAR features an intelligent nodal chassis that is configurable for a
variety of applications. Its capabilities are defined by the resource
modules it contains and the standalone products deployed at the remote
sites.

ENAR allows users to have a selection and be able to intermix access to
their network both in primary needs and with a secondary means of backup.
It is a base for network expansion and a platform for migration to new
network offerings. It provides functionality under full network
management, yet its size and architecture make very efficient use of real
estate.

The ISDN backup is the first in a series of Racal-Datacom offerings that
will incorporate basic rate ISDN and eventually primary rate ISDN in the
Excalibur Network Access Resource.

LIKELY USERS

"This program has been designed for users with certain constant concerns,
such as those typically seen in a banking or a financial services
environment," Brandte said. "These customers need high network
availability because their network is part of the mainstream of their
company's real-time business. Revenue comes in only as long as the network
is up. When the network is down the money stops flowing in or it may even
start flowing out, because these people have very specific agreements --
often with penalty clauses -- about how well the network must perform. In
these environments, end users know immediately when things are down and
can take corrective action immediately.

"When you look at the way we have optimized the Excalibur Network Access
Resource, it has usually been to assist these people who need dependable
availability, security and network management capabilities.

"These products have unique diagnostics that allow the customer to not only
know when the network isn't working properly, but also capture statistics
for customers and carriers. That greatly helps the customer and carrier to
pinpoint the problem which greatly speeds the recovery of the network. We
all know that 90 percent of the problem is finding out what the problem
is. Fixing the problem after you find it is normally easy and quick.

"The single most important guiding principle of the Excalibur product line
is to save the customer money. This includes the recurring cost of the
network as well as minimizing lost revenue and poor end-user satisfaction
from network problems."
