First Integrated Design Utilizing Basic Rate ISDN

ISDN BACKUP FOR CSU/DSU DEDICATED LINES AVAILABLE IN RACAL-DATACOM
EXCALIBUR DAP

January 25, 1994 -- SUNRISE, FL. -- Networks demanding affordable backup
for their mission-critical applications, yet requiring high-speed access
for their dedicated circuits, can now use ISDN to meet both these
criteria.

Automatic ISDN backup for multirate CSU/DSU dedicated services, to protect
a network against a dedicated line failure, is available now with the
Racal-Datacom Excalibur Digital Access Product with Integrated ISDN Dial
Backup.

"Racal-Datacom is the first vendor to introduce an integrated CSU/DSU
design utilizing basic rate ISDN," said Heather Vaughn, product manager.

ISDN has been on the horizon for several years, but up to now hardware to
utilize it for leased-line backup has been very bulky and very expensive.
The Racal-Datacom Excalibur DAP offers its ISDN backup solution within a
single box rather than the three boxes previously needed for ISDN backup.
The DAP design places a digital service unit, terminal adapter function
and integrated NT1 network termination in one box.

The only multinational standard for end-to-end digital communications, ISDN
offers the integration of data, voice and images over a single line. ISDN
provides higher bandwidth and faster call setup times than analog or
Switched 56 service and therefore is more efficient and economical than
those services. This makes ISDN attractive for mission-critical
applications demanding high-speed access.

The Excalibur DAP with ISDN backup complies with the National ISDN- 1
standard. It is able to originate or answer calls.
In the case of a failure of the dedicated DDS line, the Excalibur DAP
automatically dials the remote unit via ISDN service. The integrated
backup utilizes a single circuit-switched bearer channel ("1B") to connect
to the ISDN service. This solution offers a clear 64 Kbps channel for
backup.

This product also fully interoperates with the Excalibur DAP with Switched
56 backup.

The basic rate "U" interface of the Excalibur DAP connects directly to the
two-wire ISDN network. The Excalibur DAP supports multirate CSU/DSU
dedicated services from 1.2 to 64 Kbps in either point-to-point or
multipoint network configurations. Single port or multiport models are
offered and both can operate with async or sync terminals.

The central site unit and remote units can be configured and controlled
from the central site unit's front panel, the central site panel, or the
Racal Management System. Non-interruptive secondary channel allows
configuration and alarms without interrupting data flow. Diagnostics
include channel loop backs, error tests, digital loop backs and
self-testing.

The Excalibur DAP with ISDN Backup is the latest application to be added to
the Excalibur Network Access Resource (ENAR). The ENAR platform allows a
variety of applications and components to be mixed within the Excalibur
card carrier. ENAR's intelligent backplane and software do the busing for
whatever applications are installed in the card carrier. Applications
previously announced for ENAR are the Excalibur Analog Single-Ended T-1
(ASET-1), the Single-Ended T-l Digital Access Product (SET- 1 DAP) and the
Excalibur Dial Restoral System (EDRS).

Pricing for the Excalibur DAPs with ISDN backup ranges from $2400 to $4200
depending on the configuration. Units are available now.
