SYBASE EARNS TOP INDUSTRY "READER'S CHOICE" AWARDS

EMERYVILLE, CA, February 1, 1994 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced that it has won top awards from two
leading database publications, DBMS and Data Based Advisor. Significantly,
it was the magazines' readers -- professional application developers and
database managers -- who voted Sybase's database servers as their products
of choice.

DBMS Magazine presented Sybase with its 1993 DBMS Reader's Choice Award
naming SQL Server "Best Database Servers/Host DBMS Product." The Readers'
Choice Awards were determined by a survey DBMS Magazine sent to more than
60,000 database managers, consultants, and technical professionals to vote
on almost 400 products in 23 categories. The awards were announced in the
December 1993 issue of DBMS Magazine.

Data Based Advisor readers selected SYBASE products for two 1993 Data Based
Advisor Readers' Choice Award. The Microsoft SQL Server Version 4.2,
jointly developed by Sybase and Microsoft, was named "Best Back
End/Database Server" and "Best SQL Product."

Sybase and Microsoft have been working together for over five years in a
partnership based on a complimentary vision of client/server computing.
Today, Sybase licenses its SQL Server software to Microsoft for OS/2 and
Windows NT. The Microsoft SQL Server is compatible with Sybase's SQL
Server products for other platforms including leading Unix systems,
Digital VMS, and Novell NetWare.

Data Based Advisor determined the award winners from survey ballots sent
out to its 40,000+ subscribers. Its readers are professional application
developers who rely on the desktop as their strategic computing platform.
Data Based Advisor Readers' Choice Award winners are listed in the
November 1993 issue of Data Based Advisor.

"From the start, Sybase has placed a priority on working closely with
customers to develop products that meet their real-world business needs,"
said Stewart Schuster, Sybase's vice president of marketing. "We are proud
of these awards because they validate our approach in taking a strong user
focus, and show customers effectively implementing database systems that
contribute to their business performance."
