Apple Seeds Developers with OpenDoc for Macintosh Computers

CUPERTINO, California--May 2, 1994--Apple Computer, Inc. today announced
that it is sending its OpenDoc component-software environment for Apple
Macintosh personal computers to 1,000 developers worldwide. As a result,
these developers can begin creating software based on an open architecture
that Apple is developing in conjunction with a number of industry leaders,
as part of the CI Labs organization. OpenDoc is being developed for
Macintosh computers as well as for Windows, OS/2 and UNIX systems.

In a component-software environment, software features or functions, are
treated separately, in a modular manner. This allows developers and users
to mix and match software components, creating customized applications
that are precisely tailored to individual or organizational needs. In the
OpenDoc environment, information created with these components can be
shared across many different applications and platforms. This environment
contrasts with traditional personal-computer software environments, in
which people are forced to work within the feature sets offered by large,
sometimes unwieldy and complex, applications.

Apple's alpha version of OpenDoc for Macintosh computers enables developers
to begin building OpenDoc components. Developers enrolled in the seeding
program are receiving the code and documentation needed to commence the
development process, with many intending to build OpenDoc component
software. Apple plans a beta version of the product later this summer,
when the company intends to seed approximately 20,000 developers.

"The software industry's transition to a component-based environment offers
flexibility to both developers and users," said Ike Nassi, vice president
of Development Products for the AppleSoft division. " With its broad
acceptance by both industry partners and software developers, OpenDoc is
positioned to lead this transition."

"Using OpenDoc technology, WordPerfect will be able to deliver a higher
quality product in the form of component software," said A.J. Dennis,
OpenDoc evangelist for WordPerfect Corporation. " We are very excited
about the technology. We'll be able to design, develop and test smaller
component modules and bring them to market faster."
