GEMSTAR'S VCR PLUS + CONTROL TOWER MAKES DEBUT

World's First Universal Remote With VCR Plus+ Technology Becomes Available
To Consumers Nationwide

PASADENA, Calif., June 1, 1994 -- This week, an entirely new concept in
video control is being introduced to consumers nationwide: the VCR Plus+
Control Tower. For the first time, consumers will be able to use one
universal remote control to initiate instant and effortless VCR taping and
to activate their video components. This combination universal remote
control/VCR taping shortcut is offered by Gemstar Development Corporation,
inventors of the world's easiest and most reliable VCR taping technology,
the VCR Plus+ system.

"Although some universal remotes make using a TV and a VCR more convenient,
no other remote does it all -- from video control to error-free VCR
taping," said Dr. Henry Yuen, chief executive officer of Gemstar
Development Corporation. "The Control Tower also may be the world's
easiest universal remote to use -- it is literally set up for the consumer
over the telephone."

With new CallSet technology, the Control Tower is set up by phone,
virtually eliminating the need for a product manual. During one phone call
to a special Gemstar operator, consumers supply the brands/models of their
video components, along with their zip codes. The Gemstar operator then
transmits a tone over the telephone that sets up the Control Tower
completely. Even the correct date and time is now displayed for the
consumer. The unit is ready to control TV viewing or to tape using the VCR
Plus+ instant taping system.

To tape with the Control Tower, consumers simply press the VCR Plus+ button
and then punch in the PlusCode numbers for the programs they want to tape.
PlusCode numbers are found in TV listings of all editions of TV Guide and
in 600 U.S. newspapers. Subsequently, consumers press one more button to
tell the Control Tower whether to tape each program once, daily or
weekly.

CallSet technology also makes the Control Tower "future proof." Whenever
consumers replace existing video components, they simply call a Gemstar
operator to request that their Control Tower be "updated" over the
telephone with a new telephone tone. It's all done in one easy step within
seconds.

The VCR Plus+ Control Tower makes a dent in household remote "clutter,"
replacing up to four remote controls for TVs, VCRs and cable boxes. New
VCR Plus+ features of the Control Tower include enhanced taping memory --
the Control Tower can be programmed to tape up to 24 programs.

Like all stand-alone VCR Plus+ products, the Control Tower offers the
convenience of Cable Box Control. Cable Box Control allows consumers to
tape several programs broadcast on different channels without having to be
at home to manually change channels on the cable box.

VCR Plus + products record television programs with PlusCode numbers
published and broadcast by media with a worldwide audience of more than
240 million consumers. The Gemstar group of companies was formed to
develop and market technological products which make life easier for the
consumer. Gemstar's VCR Plus+ instant programming system is the world
standard for VCR taping. The system is available in approximately 30
countries in stand-alone VCR Plus+ units and as a feature of VCR's offered
by all of the world's VCR manufacturers.
