MULTI-TECH UNVEILS V.34 MODEM AT SPRING COMDEX '94

MOUNDS VIEW, MN--May 23, 1994 -- Multi-Tech Systems, Inc., a leading data
communications technology company, unveils its 28.8K bps V.34
MultiModemII. The MT2834BA is FlashROM-based and ITU-T V.34 draft
compliant, which means it can be upgraded by dialing into the Multi-Tech
BBS and downloading new code. MultiModemII is scheduled to ship June 13,
1994. The modem comes bundled with MultiExpress data communications and
MultiExpressFax for Windows software, along with TALKShow document
conferencing software from Future Labs of Los Altos, California.
Optionally, the MT2834BA comes bundled with Multi-Tech's high speed serial
interface card, the Intelligent Serial Interface (Model ISI551). The
MT2834BA with software only is priced at $799 U.S. and with bundled
ISI551, $849 U.S.

"The importance of 28.8K bps modems that are ITU-T compliant V.34 modems
and that can be upgraded by downloading code from a BBS can not be
overstated," states Raghu Sharma, President of Multi-Tech Systems, Inc.
"With our MultiModemII MT2834BA, users can be assured that the modem they
buy today can be kept up-to-date with any future ITU-T V.34 standard
easily and conveniently. We've heard a lot about V.FAST modems, but not
enough about how difficult they will be to upgrade when the ITU-T V.34
standard is set. Most of these proprietary modems offer a variety of
upgrade paths from replacing components, adding boards, swapping out
modems or sending them back to the factory, usually for a fee. These
options are inconvenient at best, and, despite good intentions, will not
be widely implemented. That can mean compatibility and performance
headaches for years to come."

The addition of the ISI551 high speed serial card as an option for the new
V.34 modem addresses another concern for PC users': potential data loss
due to slow PC serial port speed. The ISI551 enables processors to perform
more efficiently by providing buffers for serial port data, thereby
allowing a PC to reliably transmit data up to 115K bps.

The software bundled with the V.34 modem provides a complete suite of
communications tools from dial-in/dial-out datacomm using MultiExpress, to
send/receive faxing with MultiExpressFax, to document conferencing with
TALKShow. All bundled software is for the Windows environment.

The MT2834BA modem operates at ITU-T V.34 28.8K bps, AT&T V.32terbo 19.2K
bps, and all lower speed standards. The modem hardware provides V.42 error
correction for 100% error-free transmissions and V.42bis data compression
yielding asynchronous throughputs up to 115K bps, which are four times
faster than 28.8K bps V.34 alone (depending on file content). Fax
transmissions, at 14.4K/9600/4800 bps allow the MT2834BA to send or
receive faxes with any V.17, Group 3, or Group 2 fax machine, fax card or
fax/modem in the world. The Multi-Tech patented UNIX UUCP protocol
enhancing feature is included. The MT2834BA uses industry standard "AT"
commands for modem configuration and dialing, and includes a remote
configuration feature which allows a user to remotely change parameters
and run diagnostics for troubleshooting, technical support and system
administration purposes.

Multi-Tech Systems, which reported sales of $95 million for 1993, was
founded in 1970 to manufacture data communications equipment and systems
for the global market of networking product users. The Minnesota-based
company is well known for its MultiModem line of dial-up communications
products. Multi-Tech's family of products includes a complete line of
data/fax modems, MultiMux voice/data/fax statistical multiplexers, DSUs,
3270/3780/5250 emulation systems, X.25 PADs, UNIX serial interfaces,
communications software, LAN/WAN connectivity products, and most recently,
the MultiModemPCS, a voice/data/fax personal communication system. These
products are sold in over 70 countries through a worldwide network of
